Neither of these games now start, the screen just flashes once with nothing on screen. Is a Windows update the cause, or something else?

The same thing was happening to me. Lords of Midnight wouldn't launch (just a quick flash of a launch window) and would just get stuck on the taskbar.

Have you tried setting the games to run on 640x480 (on the launch file)? That made it work for me.

I have tried that. No joy. I have also contacted GOG. No joy!

The GoG version was developed under an old framework that is no longer supported. I gave recently built new versions but as of yet have not been able to update GoG. In the mean time you can find newer versions on www.thelordsofmidnight.com/support
