Not sure if everyone's already read this, but I saw a few reviews complaining about Chapters being M.I.A. so I thought it's worth putting up.

Earlier this year, over at http://www.ragnartornquist.com/ the man himself updated his blog. Apart from all the Secret World stuff, there's a little something for all us TLJ/Dreamfall fans.

Here's the important bit:
"...rest assured that I haven't, and will not, leave The Longest Journey and Dreamfall fans in the dark forever. Chapters is going to happen, and hopefully this year you'll know when and how."

I know it's not much, but it's something...

Any progress is good right?
I was waiting for Dreamfall chapters, but stopped about three years ago.

Video games are like books or movies. Wait too long with a sequel and people will have forgotten what the first one was about. As a narrator, you will end up explaining everything from those earlier games again - things a storyteller doesn't want to retell, but finally resolve instead!!

Dreamfall was already unbearably devoid of interactivity, but a sequel with even more "back story" cutscenes, well, I'm not looking forward to it. Until Ragnar has explained to all the new people on new platforms why Zoe is [spoiler] and April [spoiler], I will have fallen asleep playing "Chapters". And you can't just pull some pseudo-artistic narrating device out of your magic hat to remedy this ("Just make a prologue!"). Chapters would address a largely different audience, and you can not draw them in, which will affect sales and reviews without a doubt.

I just hope Ragnar doesn't go for the "why not introduce another character with entirely different problems who just meets Zoe and April" route. That's path's been traveled by now. ;)

Then there's the interactivity problem, which Ragnar has yet to address. The designers did a great job with environments and characters, but puzzles/challenges and controls in Dreamfall were just plain appalling. I still don't understand how they could think that this would work as a good "game". This is not some issue that needs to be addressed and thought of a bit for "chapters", they have to get the central element of these games right. I'm not a traditionalist in adventure gaming (I've even enjoyed Telltale's Walking Dead a lot), but I'm not playing games where the game was left out for artistic reasons. Interacting with the environment doesn't mean "trigger the next cutscene by clicking on this", and it doesn't mean "walk from point A to point B to point A to point B". But both these elements combined make up 95% of Dreamfall. I've yet to get an apology for this. ;)

/edit: Awwww, no spoiler tags on this forum?! Took out the spoilers...

at least Ragnar Tørnquist is still thinking about a sequel.
Anyone have any news about this? :/
I mean Broken Sword is getting it's sequel. Even though TLJ basically shoved a cliffhanger in our face and left it dead.
I wouldn't get my hopes up. I'm certain that Ragnar has honest intention to make a sequel and finish the story, but intention and actually making it are two different things and it's not just his decision if the project gets green light or not. But if we ever see a sequel I wish that it's gameplay is more like TLJ than Dreamfall.

I understand. Too bad they had to make an MMORPG. That means that a lot of the team is constantly occupied in maintaining it. A kickstarter project would probably net them a lot of funds which I believe they need.
I think that TLJ3 has really a tiny chance to happen since MMORPG probably sucked their savings out.

Thanks for the reddit link, Oedi!

It's funny he announced it so soon after your comment. I can't say I've been waiting for years like the majority of the people, but I did pick up and played the games last year so when I beat dreamfall I was very upset by the cliffhanger/bad ending. It might take a few years before Chapters is made though, however they started preproduction.

That's good news. It certainly happened a lot sooner than I expected. Hopefully everything goes well and cliffhangers are resolved.

After that we can start waiting The Longest Journey 4, which should be out sometimes in early 2020s. :D

At this rate I`m going to be a pensioner by the time this story is finished...It is not called the Longest Journey for nothing, I suppose!

On a bit more serious note, Dreamfall has left me quite dissapointed, both gameplay and story wise, and a few years have also passed since that. Even though I loved TLJ as a teenager, my interest in this story has vaned a lot since then. I am not sure that these Chapters will be able to pick up my interest again after so many years, not to mention the bitter aftertaste of Dreamfall.

The gameplay of dreamfall was probably pretty disappointing for point & click adventurers. However I did not mind it. I liked the story a lot until the end. Though I guess it is a pretty strong ending.

The most disappointing part in the gameplay aren't the action sequences or awful keyboard controls which some point & click adventurers hate. The disapointing part is that occasionally gameplay is very thin and you can easily spend an hour just by walking around and watching cutscenes. Story was great, but there just wasn't enough interaction to make it as great game as TLJ. While I love good stories, I also love a good challenge in the form of puzzles. Hopefully this time Ragnar doesn't forget that he is making a game and not an interactive movie.
