marcianito: I had the same problem. The easy solution, skip going to the police station from the front door. Equaly, you won't access to the police station in this way.
I go directly with the garbage truck.

You won't loose too much.

darxide: I can't fix this issue on my end. I've already got Single Buffer forced to fix other issues and I can't set the game to Window 95 compatibility mode because my entire system locks up when I start the game and I have to pull the plug.

Please go to the game's directory, default:
C:\GOG Games\The Longest Journey\32\01
and replace the 01.Xarc file with the one from here:

hier wurden einige vorschläge geposted. die ungewöhnliche lösung für mich war, einen längeren film mit einem player zu starten (vlc-player, könnte aber vielleicht auch mit dem mediaplayer klappen), bevor ich das spiel starte.
du könntest auch die 01.Xarc probieren, der link steht weiter oben.
es ist übrigens für den spielverlauf nicht nötig, die polizeistation auf diesem wege zu betreten. der richtige weg ist ein anderer.

Achhh! I'm German but I don't speak German! Have the same problem, crash right after the 'Breaking News' video on entering the police station. Where is the link to replace the 01.Xarc file?

OK. I tried replacing the 01.arc file and I still crash. And I have tried all of the other suggestions in this thread. I just downloaded this game a couple of weeks ago, so it should be working, but I cannot get past the police station. Please suggest something that may work for me. I am running Windows 7-64 bit. Thanks.

did u tested to start a long video (local or internet) with a player or your browser while u play the game? it shouldnt stop before u are done with the game. worked for many people.
