What?! Why??!

A DRM free release was a Crowdfunding promise and now it's being removed? *mind is blown*

I'm happy that customers who bought it still can use it but I'm very curious why it's being removed.

I decided to delete what I said in this post.

I hope it will return. A friend of me want to buy it soon. I warned him but it's too late.
He doesn't buys on Steam and other DRM platforms so that's a customer lost, what a pity. :(

You gotta be kidding! Any explanation as to why the game had to be removed? The game is among my favorites.

That's a shame. I was waiting until all the episodes were released before getting it, which seems to have been the right decision as I assume they won't be adding them anymore to the GOG version.

GOG (in the original post) stated that all future updates will still be provided here.
"Those who already own the games, or will purchase them before this Wednesday, will of course still be able to access them through their library. All owners will also have access to updates even after the game’s removal."

The Hinterland forum admin also indicated that the GOG release will still be kept up to date.

Huh. I completely missed that, thanks for pointing that out. That's really weird though; why remove it from GOG if they're still going to support it? I haven't seen that happen before.

i own it on the other platform can i have a gog version ?
reason i ask is i'm going to be offline soon (financial problems and isp keeps putting the price up) and i obviously won't be able to play it on steem because of not being online
obviously i'd have to prove i own it

I don't know, honestly.
We'll just have to hope that someone is allowed to provide some information at some point in the future.
I wouldn't hold my breath though.


Realistically, unless Hinterland and CD Projekt (GOG) somehow agree to add the title to GOG connect, this is almost definitely not going to happen.

That said, despite the Steam release not being DRM-free, it may be DRM-light.
That is to say, if you install it on your device, and then put Steam into offline mode, it could continue working for at least a week, if not upwards of 6 months, so long as the computer is disconnected from the internet.

To put Steam into offline mode for this purpose:
1) Make sure the computer is online for all steps before step 8.
2) Make sure Steam is fully updated.
3) Make sure The Long Dark is fully downloaded, installed, and updated. (..And any other games you want to play offline.)
4) Start The Long Dark at least once after installing or updating it through Steam while you are online. (..And any other games you want to play offline.)
5) Click "Steam" in the top left corner of the Steam client.
6) Choose "Go Offline..." from the drop-down menu.
7) Choose "Restart In Offline Mode"
8a) Don't use any online features.
8b) When you start Steam in the future, Choose "Start In Offline Mode"
8c) If you are asked for your username and password by Steam, enter them as you normally would online; they should be locally authenticated by the tokens.
8d) If you do go back into Steam online mode, repeat the process from step 1 to go offline again.

The console releases should work offline as-is.

Is it related to the Linko twitter fiasco? Maybe the developer wants to terminate their business relationship with GOG, but as the game is still in active development, they will still support the current owners with updates.

Again, just a speculation.

Man... stuff like this has me rethinking my choice to move from Steam to GOG... this is ridiculous... especially with no explanation as to why and even odder is the fact they'll keep the GOG version up to date... GOG really needs to clue us in to why this happened

What?! I've been thinking about buying that game for some time. Just today I figured I'll go pick it up and now I see this. Had I just come here three days earlier. That really sucks. I hate having to depend on third parties to play the games I own, so no steam version for me. Well that's a lost sale

Just a business decision, like dozens I make every day. We'll continue supporting the GOG build for our existing customers so nobody is negatively impacted by this removal.

What is that suppose to mean?

What is the reason removing it from store if you are going to support and keeping it updated?

Can somebody explain me this?
