Ancient-Red-Dragon: 1. Yes, you can play the game with Japanese text and Japanese voices.
2. Yes, you can play the game with English text and Japanese voices.
However, most of the dialogues in the game are
not voiced.
So you'll be doing far more reading than you will be doing listening to voice actors read the lines to you.
Something else to know is that if you play with English voices, then Cold Steel 1 and Cold Steel 2 also both feature 5,000 extra English voice lines each, per game, versus the 5,000
less English voice lines per game if you use the Japanese voices.
In other words, you to get experience way more voice acting in the games if you use the English voices. But even with the English voices,
most of the dialogues are still text-only.
Finally, Cold Steel 1 is really
not the best place to start the series, because it's actually the 6th game in the series, and the Cold Steel games directly continue the story, world continuity, and character arcs from all of the previous 5 games.
Cold Steel 1 in particular is not especially bad with needing to have played the other games first.
But once you get to the middle of Cold Steel 2, then the need to have played the previous games in order to get the full experience just keeps increasing more and more, the deeper into the series that you get.
For those reasons, the best place to start, by far, would be with this game:
https://www.gog.com/game/the_legend_of_heroes_trails_in_the_sky Thanks, I'm planning on reading a lot of Japanese. Japanese voices are nice if they're there but I'm really after Japanese text.
On GOG.com, it says that Trails in the Sky only has English audio and text. Is this correct? Or does it support Japanese text as well?
If the GOG.com version doesn't support Japanese text, I'll have to hunt down a copy elsewhere.
