Workaround is to disable movies :( Will I miss any plot elements by disabling movies?

You can try the solution that worked for me. I did post it in the other thread: https: / / www .gog.com/forum/the_legend_of_heroes_trails_in_the_sky_series/third_chapter_crashes_on_launch/post2 (I'm not allowed to post URLs so you have to remove the spaces your self ;) )
