As a HUGE fan of JRPGs,I have this game on my wishlist and I plan for the winter sale . But the questions are:
How good is the game?
Are the characters fun and interesting?
Is the story ultra cliche or does it break some tropes?
Is the world well fleshed out?
Will Xseed release other games on GOG?
And is there any games like this that you guys recommend (Steam or other plataforms)?

I'll appreciate the replies

- I'm a newcomer to the JRPG game, and I'm hooked. Fighting random trash mobs and grinding gets tedious after a while, but the story and the progression keeps me moving forward. The art is positively gorgeous.

- I'm still not far into Chapter I (the Prologue having taken six hours), but I see it as a sort of Bildungsroman. The main character starts off as a tomboyish, hot-headed teen, but already shows signs of growth. I've already encountered all sorts of characters – a boy wise beyond his years, an alcoholic mentor, a flamboyant gay who hits on almost everything, wise father figures etc.

- The story isn't yet known to me because it progresses very slowly, which I like. The first parts are about the beginning of your main characters' career, then there's a big investigation of a missing airliner, and I suspect I'll soon deal with the politics between my own kingdom and the neighbouring empire.

- The world has a rich history. Have a look at this website and judge for yourself: http://trailsinthesky.com/

- There are rumours of Ys being released here, which is a somewhat more combat-centric game.

- I've heard the Suikoden series is very similar to this one; with a greater emphasis on character development too. I don't know where you can purchase it, though, but parts II and V seem to be the most popular in the series.

To conclude, yes, I think you should buy the game!

Outlook is good.

The characters start out a bit cliché and gradually become more fleshed out and less tropey through this game and the sequel which is coming this winter. Estelle is initially a sheltered, tomboyish and naïve girl who's quick to speak her mind and usually the last person to know what's going on. (most of the jokes early in the game are at her expense) Despite her inexperience she comes across as very sympathetic right off the bat and gradually grows more mature as the story goes on.

Joshua, the co-protagonist, seems wise beyond his years and is usually the one keeping Estelle in line, but there are also some hints spread out here and there that give one another perspective on him.

A word on the "flamboyant gay", his name's Olivier btw (who's probably closer to bi since he also tends to hit on any female he lays eyes on...except Estelle), he's a good example of a character who's more than he appears at first. When the party first meets him, he instantly identifies them as bracers despite the group not wearing their badges at the time. Joshua gets slightly suspicious of him, asking him how he was able to identify them with a mere glance and Olivier instead responds by telling him how attractive he is. The result is Joshua being completely weirded out and Estelle blowing a fuse. Eventually the dust settles, the party leaves and nobody remembers what the conversation was about again before Oliver started putting the moves on Joshua. Olivier's actually perfectly capable of acting normally when he wants to, but he likes to put on antics to get a reaction out of people or, just as often, to redirect the conversation away from himself. And he's actually quite good at that.

Regarding the world: there's a lot of stuff going on in the background while you're trekking the country. Each NPC in town has a name and their dialogue changes after each story event. In each chapter there are usually several mini-stories going on in the background, like a woodcutter struggling to gain the approval of his father-in-law, a pilgrim and his shopaholic wife who are travelling the country at the same pace as you or a female factory worker who gets drawn into a triangle relationship between herself, her struggling boyfriend and her enamoured colleague. You can focus completely on the main story or try to get to know these little mini-stories going on in the world around you, but the fact that they exist is a credit to the creators. It's one of the most thoroughly developed and well-fleshed out worlds in JRPG history.

The main plot is a bit slow at first, but picks up about half-way through and ends with a major bang that'll have you aching for the sequel.

I'd say definitely buy it. It's a real jewel that deserves more love.
How good is the game?
Well quality is always very subjective, but I'd say it's 8/10.
Are the characters fun and interesting?
I'd say yes. Of course they aren't really THAT unique, but the dialogues in this game are very well written so it makes you get attached the characters.
Even though you will probably hate one or two because of their personality.
Is the story ultra cliche or does it break some tropes?
Well, there's isn't much of a generic "hero saves the world" story in this one. It's more like "Watch two teenagers grow up slowly". That's isn't really all that unique though.
What I think is pretty good is that despite the basic plot being very straighforward (basically: "you want to be senior bracers so you have to do quests for it"), there are quite a few mysteries brought up that keep the plot interesting anyway. It's mostly the small things.
Is the world well fleshed out?
It is incredibly fleshed out because the world was developed over the span of many many years via many titles that all play in the same world. The game only plays in a very small part of the world too, but you will always feel that many things happen in the "background".
Will Xseed release other games on GOG?
Probably at least the sequel to this title. If there will be more depends on the number of sales.
And is there any games like this that you guys recommend (Steam or other plataforms)?
If you ask me what's closest to Trails in the Sky is probably Grandia. Very very similar structure and even the battle system is somewhat similar.
While not very original, it is well executed. I expect the second and third games to be much more interesting, as it is this first game that sets the stage. I give it about 70 out of 100, as of now.

Are any of the Grandia games available for purchase as a digital download?

I checked Wikipedia and only Grandia 2 and a Grandia MMORPG were released outside of consoles.
Grandia is for PlayStation.

(OP said "or other platforms", so I assumed he didn't limit himself to PC.)
"Other plataforms" means anything:Consoles,PC,handhelds.
And thank you guys for the replies and for helping me decide. Just another question:Is the game well optimized? Does it crash often and is it filled with game breaking bugs?

l0rdtr3k:
I'm on the third chapter of the game and I haven't come across any bugs. I'm running a Windows 7 64-bit system equipped with a Ge Force 250 GTS. As far as I can tell the game is well optimized. However, I'm not running it at the highest possible resolution.
There were a few bugs here and there but most have been fixed with patches already. For me the game is running stable.
Yes, I just finished the game, and it froze only once on my old laptop, so it's good.
Also,I'm interested on Recettear:An Item Shop's Tale. Is it also worth the price?

It is a short but sweet experience. However, I think the dungeon crawling aspect is on the boring side - it is the business and characters that make the experience. If you like Harvest Moon or Rune Factory, the game should suit you.

What Sabim_Stargem said. Combat is in real-time in Recettear, but the dungeons aren't interesting. That game is all about haggling and being a salesman. Raising enough money for the next instalment (which go up exponentially) is challenging until you figure out the haggling mechanic and how people will react, then it becomes easy.
