I synthesized the quartz, but it won't add them to the slots or let me open new slots up. What am I doing wrong?
Hmm, sounds odd. Maybe try to talk to the ones in the shop and then try out the quartz tab again?
Maybe you don't have enough sepiths? Also, as it was mentioned in the tutorial - some slots can olny have specific quartz types, no other.
sounds like you don't have the right amount of sepiths to upgrade or to open slots and i think yor ta;lking about the first game also and if you did the tut when you first played you could open one slot now if your playing the sc game you should be able to upgrade 1 slot if you do the tut

and this is a answer to your problem
Another type of beginning-trouble:

Is it normal that at some point you rather should try to avoid fights instead of searching them?
I'm in chapter 1 so far (from what I can tell near the end of the chapter) and I get the feeling, that avoiding many monsters is kinda "needed".
Like all the physical-immune golden'bubble-monsters in the tower of the area. If I hadn't started avoiding fights I would have had no more SP in the middle of the tower... so are quiet some fights that simply feel like they're not worth the ressources you have to put in.

I already read that grinding is not really necessary and actually possible (unless you try this shining pom hunting), but I'm usually someone who "takes on every fight" in rpgs. But here is the first time I actually feel forced to avoid most of the fights cause they're just too expensive (ressource-wise, especially seen on SP).
So I wonder if I totally make something wrong with the quartz I'm using (already using this EP1 and EP'Cut1). So far Estelle has Healing and lil bit of Earth, Joshua Time and Fire and Scherazard has Wind and some Fire.

You're not doing anything wrong, saving resources by choosing the encounters like that is a common part in many RPGs.

Thank you for clearing this up.
Guess most rpgs I played so far, was the different kind, were pretty much all fights kinda gave you something to work with (exp, items and stuff, which didn't feel like you're putting more ressources into the fight than getting out of it)). So Trails in the sky is the first rpg I play which is different for me ^^
With knowing this I kinda feel better, that I don't try to fight every fight I see.

A little note about resources; a bit of planning can go a long way conserving them. It's usually best to use the tear-family spell to heal rather than items. Every time you level up, your HP and EP is completely refilled. Keep an eye on your exp and don't be afraid to abuse your magic if you're close to a level-up.
