I've played the avi file in other programs and have noticed the same behavior. Certain parts show warping on the screen and stuttering. I'm not really sure what it causing it. The last time I played FC was about 6 months ago and it didn't have these issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Could be a codec conflict:

I think that the video file is damaged.
I’ve just installed the game (using galaxy and the offline installer just in case) and I have the exact same problem and also tried to open it in a few media players (Vlc, MPC-HC and even mobo player with an Android smartphone) and there is no difference what so ever.

Since the video uses the Xvid coded (following Gydion advice) I tried to download the latest version from the www.xvid.com (that I suppose is the official page for the codec) but, as you can imagine, there was no change.

I’ll try to send an email to Xseed support about this.

I just tested this and can confirm that I have the same problem with the video.

I've still got the previous versions installer, so I extracted the video file from it and it does not have that distortion, but it does run @ 30FPS instead of 60FPS.

Perhaps the distortion might be due to the method that was used to insert frames into the video to get it to run at a higher frame rate?

The original version doesn't have the audio embedded inside the video file, but I've just found that the intro sound is the same as ED6002.ogg located under the BGM folder.

EDIT: Just noticed the second chapter's intro video has the same problem (though it seems a little less obvious). I also have the previous version of the installer and the original SC opening does not have the problem, so I think this is to do with increasing the video frame rate in the August 2017 updates.

It is a shame, because beside the distortion, I really like the higher frame rate in the newer versions; but if XSEED roll back to the previous versions of the video the problem should disappear...hopefully they will find another way of encoding the video to enjoy higher frame rates without that crazy fish eye type distortion.

Hey Jamie

Many thanks for checking this with an older version of the game, I downloaded it recently so I didn't have the opportunity to do that comparison.

I sent the email to Xseed before reading your post, it’s a shame because what you’ve said about the intro for the second chapter it's also important and deserve to be checked :(

Fortunately I linked this thread in the email, so I hope that support will read all the posts.

Again thank you! :)

Not a problem, I'm pretty pedantic about these things, so I'm hoping for a fix as well!
Hello

Not only the opening doesn't feel natural running at 60 fps.
But I also have this weird problem in which a random black box appears during the opening cinematic:
youtube.com/watch?v=9nQL30ZQa74 (I'm not the uploader)

And I juste wasted some hours trying to find a solution but it seems that the problem is the avi file (ed6_op.avi) itself (in my case). It is seriously annoying...

Can someone help me?
Is it really needed to have a video for this game in 1080p i believe instead of 720p.
And also the game complains about mfplat.dll but still plays the videos on windows xp at least in windowed mode haven't tried full screen, tried full screen now it doesn't complain about mfplat.
The 1080p intro video also lags here when ingame.
And also i can assume this game only has an opening intro video and a ending video right?
Oh btw with my setting in smplayer the intro video avi file doesn't lag at all, just found out on smplayer that the video is faster and it end prematurly,i could click the time spot and it moved the video to it's actual screen showind instead of more forward as it was.
What ever the basic player is ingame it probably isn't compatible with 2 cores properly maybe it's windows media player, lack of setting for it are rather unfortunate.
Okay i tried combined community codecs package the music plays normally ingame but the vid stays behind meaning it only plays slower but it doesn't warp.Same results for k-lite.
On ffdshow it was rather what you described.
Don't know what they are using ingame for videos.

Just adding myself to the list of people with the intro video issue.

It looked to me like a bad style decision initially. It reminded me of how when TV tries to make their shows 'HD' they blur movements. Honestly, I thought it was just that the video was nor originally made to be seen by PC? I'm not tech savvy.

I also had the black box thing. It looked like the Trails logo just sat 'behind' the video as it played and occasionally when the video had nothing to show, the box for the logo seeped through.

Hasn't affected my gameplay though. Fun game.

I found this video soon after originally making this post.
It's the closest to what I saw. Especially when it shows the staff and tilts down, the motion blur of the staff looks odd.

I will just say that OP problem is still the same. Video is delayed, distorted and kind of strange to look at. Still no solution for this one? Like Downloading fixed video file or something?
I too have this issue. I completed Trails of Cold Steel 2 and wanted to go back and play Trails in the Sky. I allowed Galaxy to update my installation. What a fucking mistake! It gave me a shit DirectX 9 version which runs like molasses but that is a separate issue. The opening video has been butchered with some god awful frame-interpolation technique to make a fake 60Hz video from a 30000/1001Hz video.

There's the obvious black boxes, horrible interpolation artifacts. I know it ain't the game, I know it ain't my DirectShow codecs/filters because I get the same crap plying the files on Linux using VLC and MPV

Who at XSEED allowed this to pass QA? Does anyone in this thread have a Twitter account and want to bitch at them? https://twitter.com/xseedgames Tell them to bring back the old video that is 176822844 bytes large with md5sum 50cd32b0e5c3f1cb259b19a19f8068e3

I dread to find out what has happened with the other games.

If you have an old installer from before the update on 2017-05-04, use that. Otherwise have Galaxy roll back to an earlier version in More -> Settings. If you have an old backup then you can restore the file "ed6_op.avi"

There was an update for the game today (Galaxy users for now) and it looks like it fixes the intro video problem, for most part at least.
Because I think that at the start of the video there is still some warping in the image.
Can anyone confirm this?

Interestingly, the video did not stutter BEFORE the update for me. Some really fluent motions in that video do stutter now though.
The video had some strange effects in the old version, such as a white rectangle overlay that would flash into vision at some points. The new one doesn't have that. A few sfx also seem to be missing in the new one? I watched them side by side a few days ago.
