So I just started playing this game, and went to the tower, rescued the kids... I'm still in the prologue so I thinks this is going to be a looooooong game. Anyway, I'm having trouble with the controls. I set up an Xbox 360 pad and it works perfectly, but... I'm confused about the S-Breaks. What button is it? I accidentally hit it during the sewers mission but I can't seem to get it to work again and the Configuration Tools doesn't have an S-Break button. So... Is it the same as the map? The same as the attack? I'm going nuts here xD Loving the game though :)

EDIT: Also, was anyone able to set the triggers to do anything? I'm not used to pushing the analog as buttons so it would be great to be able to use the triggers for that.

Seconded, I want to use my Xbox controller, but dunno if I can.
When you play with mouse + keyboard, the s-break buttons are 1-4 (one for each character, for example you press 1 to use Estelle's S-Break when she has over 100 C points.)
No idea how it would translate with a controller, but the fact that each character has a different S-Break key might help you find them. Are there 4 unused buttons on your controller?

Well, unused buttons would be the Start key and both triggers.
I currently have the gamepad setup like this from the Configuration Tools:

A: OK/Talk
B: Camp/Cancel
X: Bracer Notebook
Y: Recipes
LB: Map
RB: Mini map
Select: Show locations
Pushing the left or right analogs: Rotate camera

It doesn't recognize the LT and RT buttons when setting up, though.

EDIT: Just tried and discover that the arrow keys are not used either and just like the triggers, these can't be setup on the Configuration Tools.

when you walk (or when you use the "move" order during combat), do you use the analogs, or the arrows?

I imagine you did try every button during combat while your characters are above 100 CPs (quite easy to test, since you also can S-break during one of your character's turn)
For moving around I use the left analog stick. The right one doesn't do anything though. I didn't know I could try the S-Break key on my turn... I just went to the "Craft" option and select it like a normal attack/art. Will try that as soon as I get back from work to see if I can find a key that activates the S-Break ;)

Yeah, it allows you to activate another character instead of the active one, for example. Though I don't remeber if it activates immediately, replacing the current's character turn, or if the S-Break simply gets programmed for the next time slot.
It's useful for getting your best attack in during a "critical hit" time slot. Or a "bonus cristal" time slot, too. Attacks that deal numerous smaller strikes, like Estelle's S-Break, are brutal when used that way on a Boss :)

Hi !
It took some time for me before I understand it too, in fact, it's easy but not well explained (and the update seems to have changed a little bit how it's working in a better way).

You have two way to perform S-Break.

1) First one is the "when it's your turn" way (it's not the best way ;)). You just have to go on your "Craft" menu and launch it as an normal attack.

2) Second (and better) is to launch it when it's someone's (one of your character or an opponent) turn, to be able to perform the S-Break just after his turn (and this way take his follower's turn and so eventually the bonus associated with the turn) (or taking his turn if it was one of your character).
When you have over 100C points, your red icon of "S-Break ready" appears. When you want to use it, press left (or right) to choose the S-Break of wich character you want to launch (if more than one is ready for S-Break) : it will make appear red arrows around the red icon, now press your gamepad's confirm button to confirm your choice : it should be launched just after the action currently performing. Once launched, you can't cancel it ! But, if you pressed left (or right) by mistake (and still not launched it), you just have to push up or down to have your cursor again in the usual menu.

I took a screenshot to give an example.
Here Estelle and Joshua have their S-Break ready, and it's Joshua's turn. I pushed left (or right) control (don't remember sorry), and doing this was gone into "S-Break selection". I could push left (or right) to select Estelle's S-Break and just have to confirm (push the A or B button on a xbox controller, I don't know wich one it is) : when I'll do, she'll perform his S-Break taking Joshua's turn. He will be able to play just after Estelle's S-Break. If nothing is launched and finally changed your mind, you still can cancel the "S-Break selection" by pushing up or down.

It would be almost the same thing if a monster is attacking/moving : you can launch your S-break while he is moving/ attacking in the same way : your S-Break will be performed just after his action, taking this way his follower's turn (and bonus associated).

Hope this will help ! And sorry for my english XD (and loooong explanation)

There shouldn't be any problem :)

Great ! it's a pleasure to help :)
I am playing the PC version of the game. How do I open the menu during the game. I am just starting out and I can't access the menu to save or load or quit the game. Can anyone help
The menu is the "camp" button which is the same as the "cancel" button. I set it up to the "B" button on my pad but in the "Configuration tool" you can set it up to any key (keyboard, mouse or pad) and I think is the mouse right key by default. I don't remember which key was on the keyboard.
I think the default key for the "camp" is either escape, or space. Try "escape".
