A review on steam's page says the Gold edition has higher resolution and better compatibility with newer OSes but it's missing ambient sounds, has annoying achievement and character bio popups, and a new tutorial/hint system that tells you what to do or where to go? I don't know how it works, the review didn't go into detail, but that sounds like something I don't want or need.

Has anyone played both versions and can offer an opinion? The higher resolution and better compatibility is nice, but the original seems like it has the more immersive experience.

I have both, and prefer the low-res original version. The "Gold" edition by DotEMU has a number of bugs in it that cause crashes to desktop and frustrate your immersion and playing. Fortunately the unique "clock" saving system helps you here as if you do crash you can go back automatically to when you began the crash session.

The tutorial/hint system is not something you need to access unless you need to, and the character bio popups are also no big deal; neither are game-breakers or spoilers. I must admit that the high-res of the Gold edition does look much nicer than the original (which was a DOS game), but this game is so incredible you'll quickly forget about graphics, trust me. If you don't resort to a walkthrough you will spend many hours wandering that train trying to figure out your next move and just as crucially how to execute it.
