brianhutchison: I managed to get a clean install as follows:

* Uninstall The Guild 2 - Pirates of the European Sea
* Install The Guild 2 - Pirates of the European Sea
* Do NOT run the game
* Install the patch
This did the trick and got me a successful installation. Thanks for the info!

Note: this isn't just a GoG thing, but I sure wish every updater checked if it would work before running. I'm getting fed up with all these patches I've gotten over the year that run for five to ten minutes and then, at the end, tell me they can't do their work because of some dumb file problem. Can't they check first and save us the time?

I didn't have a problem with the installation and I had checked thoroughly before giving the OK to Judas.

NB. Not running the game before installing the patch seems strange. Even when I was corresponding with Judas I went through these steps of; first playing the updated version and checking the version was correct, secondly uninstalling the game and reinstalling the previous gog version, running said version to check its was indeed an older version, then installing the patch (yes with an installer not unzipping an archive) and finally running it again with no issue whatsoever.

So, no problem from my end.
my fault... fixed
