I'm trying to get the key from Sentius and told him I'm still going to get the key one way or another, and he says "I will keep it around my neck from now on".

This made me realize that if a time-loop is triggered, he will be carrying it with him and I can get it when he creates a portal. But no matter how long I waited between telling him this and triggering the time-loop, his body never has the key.

Is this a bug? Or a missed opportunity in the game logic?

It's a design decision. Allowing the player to steal the key from Sentius would break the story. :-)

This is such a greatly written game that I think there should be an in-universe explanation for that.

And of course, I wouldn't be posting here if I hadn't thought of one. We can easily assume that's what happens, but you guys could always implement a tiny animation in an update to address it if you want.

See, Sentius remembers everything between loops, right? That means he remembers all your previous conversations, and he probably knows, or has deduced, you can carry objects with you through the time loop. It follows he knows you will probably be able to get the key from his corpse when he performs the ritual, and you will have it on the next loop if you do so. And that is the one thing he can't afford to let happen, or else you'll find Sentilla and discover his plan.

Knowing all that, and knowing he will still have the key when time resets no matter what happens to it now, it would be logical for him to throw the key to the abyss (or any other hard-to-access spot) before performing the ritual, so you will never be able to get it from his corpse. Like I said, it would be very easy to add an animation of him doing so as he makes his way to Proserpina's temple when the Golden Rule is broken. Maybe even a line of dialogue stating his intention of doing so to (allegedly) protect the cistern, if the voice actor is available.

Of course, even without those additions, I will assume that's what he does. :)
