For those experiencing a crash in the room with the suspended aircraft at the very start of the game. Five years after its initial release and this still hasn't been fixed with the GOG release. Regardless, here's how to fix it:

Head to C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\PhysX\Engine\82D8704BAB07. Inside this folder one should find PhysXCore.dll
Navigate to the game's installation folder and copy it under Binaries\Win32, replacing the existing PhysXCore.dll
Thanks thought it was a setting i changed in the graphic option.
Yeah, you can also just disable PhysX in the graphics options menu. That solves the problem, too.
Fix worked for me.

Couldn't play the game at all, because of constant freezing during combat. Disabling PhysX in the graphic options did the trick. Thanks for the tips!
I too had better luck with just turning physx OFF as it's just bugged for some reason. With a gtx1080ti, anytime I even got close to an area with the swirling green or blue spheres, it was dropping to like 5-10 fps. One area had 2 in the same vicinity and it expected you to fight enemies at the same time, and was basically impossible due to the slow down. Granted this was @4k with everything maxed, but it now stays a solid 62 fps regardless.
This should be stickied. Much Ta!
Thanks. You have saved GOG a refund.
thanks it worked

Uninstalled. Good luck playing Nanny y'alls.
Glad I missed nothing with the wave of console cover shooters which came out at that time.
Guess I just install Steam and get some real shooters where you don't have to play "fiddle with a key to dock on a brick and be able to duck at all".
