Update 1 was the last update, Update 2 is this update. I do not see Update 2 in the manual GOG files as of yet--only on Galaxy, atm.
Hi waltc, Thanks for bringing this up. The patch is now live, but GOG builds the offline installers so hopefully they will arrive tomorrow. We will update when we get further information regarding this.

I don't have a problem at all with inXile about this--it's GOG that has to configure the manual patches, as you mentioned. Those are always a couple of days after the Galaxy patch--regardless of the game or developer.

I do have another problem, however, that you may not want to hear about...;) I'm having a tough time getting Galaxy to properly Update the game to update 2. On top of the Update 1 installation, Galaxy is attempting to put 22GBs in as Update 2--but for some reason it's not working. After the download portion and the configuration is complete in Galaxy, the install starts "Moving" a lot of stuff (with a percentage readout "Moving 1%" etc to 100%; it takes 10-15 *minutes* to do the move--after the 22GBs have been downloaded and the patch applied!)--I have no idea what it's doing, but it's very slow, and after it completes the "Moving" exercise, the game seems somewhat garbled--and the saves are gone!

However, I found them--it seems that this patch has moved the saved game folder into the root directory of the game but the folder only shows up after the game is run the first time! --but nothing is in them--so it appears your saves are gone, but they are not. To get your saves, after you run the game--just start it and then exit-- you have to go to the old location appdata\local\Bardstale4DC\Saved and copy all of the folders in that location and paste them into (using my drive letter here) M:\The Bard's Tale IV DC\BardsTale4DC\Saved\, after first deleting the folders and files in M:\the Bard's Tale IV DC\BardsTale4DC\Saved\ first! (Or you might simply overwrite these files--but I didn't try that.) But then the next time the game is run your saves will be there.

Is that weird, or what?...;) I've never seen anything quite like this, I have to say....;) But I'm not quite through here with the good news...

I loaded my most recent save, and went into the still portrait with loading spirals churning--unfortunately, the game locked up right there and the game goes into a perpetual loop and the only way out is to taskmanage your way out.

I've spent most of my afternoon attempting to get it to work--it doesn't--so I've dropped GOG a message about it--something is really messed up on their end, I think. It must be--can conceive of inXile letting something like this out into the wild! I tried to uninstall the game and simply let Galaxy do a brand new install of Update 2 in full. That never worked at all--I kept getting a DISK ACCESS FAILURE message from Galaxy--but it didn't matter what drive I tried installing it to--I got the same error. The *only* way I could get Update 2 to install at all through Galaxy was to use the *manual* update files for Update 1, and install the game--which runs fine. Until you try to update it using Galaxy to Update 2--as I've related in detail above....;) (My drives are all fine, btw.)

Have you ever...?....;) My advice to Gog users affected like I've been is to continue to play Update 1 until Update 2 has been sorted out by the relevant parties...!

EDIT: OK I got one of my earlier saves to load--just not the last one. However, in the frame there are, in the upper left hand corner of the screen when the scene loads, error messages. They are red in color and small, and one says, "Lightning needs to be rebuilt--there are 28 unbuilt items that need to be built." Or, something like that, anyway. Clearly it's a debug mode of somekind. Looks like maybe someone at inXile sent the wrong files to Galaxy...?

I got a response from GOG and they asked me for my Galaxy logs which I emailed them earlier today. I just logged on to Galaxy and am having it verify my BTIV game files--will let you know what happens--hopefully, it's all taken care of by now. I really didn't want to write that post yesterday--but I thought you might like to know! Weird, huh?....;) I'm sure just a snafu somewhere. I'll come back and report and try the help desk if I am still seeing the same stuff.
OK, I finished verifying the game files without a problem! So someone fixed something @ Gog. Yesterday, It would spend 5 seconds trying to install and then stop with "DISK ACCESS FAILURE" error. I could not get past that at all--and I think it was a problem in the Gog servers of some kind--because only once I got a "GOG Server Error" error box in addition to the weird Galaxy message.

I decided today to start a new game, and unless my eyes are deceiving me, that opening scene in Skara Brae never looked better! Looks really really nice! Absolutely gorgeous at 4k! Wonderful!

*But here's what appears in small red letters at the leftmost top portion of the screen:

"Lighting needs to be rebuilt (13 unbuilt Objects)---it looks like the number of unbuilt objects fluctuates from scene to scene. But so far the red writing top left screen is visible throughout the game, even on Update 1 saves. Looks like a debug-mode flag.

*Is there any new information about the Saved Game location? I will test that, too, shortly.
EDIT: OK--the save game location is still in the root directory of the game--in the folder the game created after the first run. In my system, that is:

M:\The Bard's Tale IV Director's Cut\BardsTale4DC\saved\saved games\
Note: I renamed this folder and when I booted the game it created a new directory in the game root of the same name--but with zero saves in it.

I thought briefly about trying again to download a complete version of the update 2 version of the game from scratch in Galaxy, but since I have verified the files there seems little point to doing so. What I did was to install Update 1 from the GOG manual files and then try to update it to Update 2 using Galaxy. Didn't work yesterday, but as I say it successfully verified today.

Will return with further updates if needed.

EDIT: OK, I made a mistake yesterday when I said the saved game from Update 1 got stuck in a loop--it didn't, as I discovered today in loading the same file. The game load took 30-40 seconds, if not longer, and I taskmanaged out thinking the game had gone into a loop. Glad to say that it didn't, but for at least this first saved-game load it took much longer than it had taken in Update 1. All of this is likely tied together.

Right now, I'm thinking the build Update 2 on GOG is simply an earlier build not quite ready for prime time that got there by mistake--but I'm playing, anyway--and as I mention--graphics are great at 4k!

EDIT: Had to cut the screen shot way down to have it fit the GOG 500k limit for attached images. You can plainly see the red debug text at the top left of the screen.

I see that the GOG manual files for Update 2 are now posted--I am downloading and will try those next to see if there's a difference!
Having had the same issues as the original poster, I tried to install using the offline files. That did not work at all - the installer offers an install path containing invalid characters. After choosing an acceptable path the installer aborts with an error message about invalid characters in the path anyway.

You beat me to it--was about to post the same thing! I have never seen a game from GOG as messed up as the update 2. They did a decent job with the Update 1 patch--it worked, so no telling what's happened, now.

I tried installing the game from scratch through Galaxy again today--same problems--update 2 two refuses to install the whole game through Galaxy, and refuses to install from the manual files, too.

To repeat: I own 342 games on GOG, and this is the only one with these symptoms. My ticket is still open at Gog, and this morning I added the info about the manual install files.

Though I hate to say it--because I love this game--it appears as if inXile simply sent the wrong files to GOG--that would surely explain the red debug text running at top left of the screen in Update 2, eh?

Done.
For folks seeing the little debug notes in the upper left, are you using PC, Mac, or Linux?

PC. The patch seems to not like GoG Galaxy. It decided to start using the GoG galaxy folder for savegames and configurations instead of the previous one from Appdata where old settings and savegames were found. I suspect it's trying to pull some settings from both and causing a conflict.

PC, Windows 10, 64b

I have opened a ticket on the official Zendesk.

I also think it is related to some settings in my old config file that are misunderstood by the updated version ...
