The FAQ says that one advantage of Expert mode is the drops are better.

Does that mean just the boss treasure bags? We're about to enter hardmode in our Expert multiplayer game, and, for instance, though I have 22 zombie banners (1100+ zombie kills), I've accumulated exactly 2 shackles. The coin drops seem to be the same. I've a few depth meters, but not nearly as many as I had in normal mode with roughly the same number of bat kills.

On the other hand, we have way more sky islands that we are supposed to...

According to the Wiki it means higher percentage of cooler stuff. Just as an example, when you kill a Queen Bee in Normal it's a 33% you get Bee Grenades, but in Expert it's 100%.
Most randomly dropped items have a higher rate. It's generally between 50% and 100% higher. Some of the boss bags give two drops, as well. The Wall of Flesh bag, for instance, always drops one emblem and one weapon (plus the expert item itself). Coin drops are roughly doubled as well.

Shackles should be dropping a lot more, therefore, and while I've gotten loads of other random items, I really haven't gotten many shackles or zombie arms, which is unusual. I think it's possible that the weapon-wielding zombies don't drop normal zombie loot, which would account for that.

While I like Expert mode on the whole, I wish there was a different implementation of difficulty rather than just doubling everything. Certain high-damage monsters with difficult-to-avoid attacks (turtles, rune wizard) are simply brutal in expert without being satisfying.
expert mode is very good for rare drops....best example: the metal detector from the dryad...normal 50% expert 100%

a few mobs get new attacks (debuff bite from bats for example) and most bosses got new attack modes (plantera is a pain in the ass now)

but most important: the cool boss treasure bags...u get cool stuff from it (mecha minecart for example) and:

DEVELOPERS VANITY clothes XD
