Okay so... as most of us know by now, there are four different versions of this game:
1998 — CD version for Windows (cover on MobyGames
) the good old version with normal gameplay, manual exploration of the house as in "The 7th Guest" or something, and background music and sounds during exploration, BUT: bad video quality with interlacing
1998 — DVD version for Windows (cover on MobyGames
) the same version with the same bad video quality as on the CD version, but on a double-sided DVD
1999 — DVD version for DVD players (cover on MobyGames
) runs on every DVD player, has the infamous "new" DVD button interface and "simplified" exploration (by merely pressing buttons), during which there's hardly any music or sounds, BUT: great DVD video quality
2012 — mobile port for iOS (entry on the AppStore
) has the stupid DVD button interface and the "simplified" exploration from the DVD player version, BUT: the good video quality, too!
So... it looks like GOG has a version with bad video quality (either the old CD videos, but non-interlaced or some compressed versions of the DVD video files). Okay. However, it also seems to have the bad "new" button interface with the bad "new" exploration from the DVD version of the game.
So it seems like this GOG version combines the near-worst of both worlds!
I'm not sure I understand which versions are talked about in this thread (when talking about video conversions). Are you guys converting the great DVD videos (from VOB files) for the great old Windows version (with the real exploration mode and the real music and sounds)?
If so: PLEASE tell me how you did that! I want to do that myself, too!
(I do have the old boxed Windows PC version in my big box game collection, PLUS: I got a copy of the DVD version for DVD players on Amazon, which arrived a week ago. Now I'd really like to combine the two!)
