I suggest pasting the contents of the config file here. It may give a clue as to the problem.

Simply go to the install directory and look for the TOEE.cfg file.

Right click on it and select edit (it should open in notepad --otherwise you may have to tell it to use that program to open it)

then copy it and paste it in the forum. But take a look in it as well. It may clue you in to the problem.

It works, however when i manually tried to edit it I put in the wrong width and height for the video resolution. That caused a CTD right after the cinemas. After putting in the correct resolutions it worked.

Good Luck.

I should also mention that if i click on the shortcut on desktop it CTD right after the loading bar. However if I (rick click -run as administrator) on the TOEE.exe in the install directory it works fine.

I got my issue fixed. The game starts now properly.

I have no idea how or why the game is functioning. I just kept re-installing the game for a while. None of the compatibility settings or config changes was relevant to this specific issue I had.

I have a hunch this issue might be related to AV / Firewall software. I noticed Comodo had an update available and I installed it. After that, Comodo recognized ToEE.exe having malware content (that's a false alert). After that, the game also worked. Double check your AVs / Firewalls! Create exclusion rules for the folder where you are going to install the game.

edit; scrambled the hunch.

Yeah, it's sweet. I'm absolutely puzzled over what solved it. I might experiment on it tomorrow so I can confirm if it was just because of updating Comodo firewall.

You might try going to www.microsoft.com/directx and clicking on downloads for gamers. It will download all of the older libs from prior versions of directx. Even if you have Windows 7 with DX10 like me, it *still* finds a bunch of files I don't have and grabs em. Worth a shot.

I hate seeing a fellow good old gamer in pain :(

*EDIT* Glad to hear you got it working!

Unfortunately none of those solutions did the trick for me.

However, I did manage to get the blasted thing working! :D

The problem is that GOG has the game patched up to the last officially released update - patch 3. This patch appears to be incompatible with my system for some reason - because upon rolling back to patch 2 the game suddenly started working.

Rolling back is a bit of a fiddly process though.

Follow this simple guide to get Patch 2 installed. The game should load fine then.

Special props to the Circle of 8 guys - without whom I wouldn't have got this game working.

Everyone should download their mods and give them hugs!

Hope this helps whoever else is having this problem

I didn't downgrade to patch 2, yet I am running the co8 mod..just started tho. I hope I don't screw up my install by not downgrading first.
Problem solved for me. Turned out it was the D3DOverider wrapper. I created a profile for TOEE and now it works perfectly.
For everyone having problems running the game after install, when it crashes after "initializing sector data" download this new temple.dll file, i fixed it in a debugger. just replace file (make backup of it just in case) im sure someone in here will check the file is clean. no viruses.

You have my eternal thanks. This worked like a charm.
Alas, for me it still doesn't work.

ToEE always works after the first install, but crashes after I quit it and come back to play some more. It invariably shuts down at the point where the 'intializing sector data' message is displayed. In my case, it probably has something to do with the BINK-movies the game tries to play: when I delete or move the game's 'movies'-folder, the game works fine. (Still, it would be nice if I'd be able to enjoy the whole experience)

Here's what I tried:

- Installed the vanilla game
- Made sure it would run (i.e. started it, and edited some options in the menu).
- Tried to downgrade to Patch 2, as per instructions (Doesn't work for me).
- Installed the Co8-modpack
- Set my resolution to 1680 x 1050
- Started the game > sometimes it works, other times it crashes.

Besides that, I've:

- Run the game as Administrator
- Set the compatibilty to Win XP SP2 and SP3
- Disabled Win 7's themes.
- Disabled antialiasing (I usually set this to ON)
- Installed the new temple.dll provided by Bispoo

One of my major gripes is that it is hard to pin down what exactly makes the game crash. Sometimes - when I've done a fresh install of the vanilla version - ToEE works normally for a while, even after applying the Co8-mod. After rebooting it consistently keeps crashing, however.

The new temple.dll (when applied to the Co8-mod) really seems to mess things up for me: the game doesn't even reach the 'initializing sector data'-phase anymore. Still, I'm very gratefull that a forum-member took the time to look into this for fellow gamers.

Firewall & AV software. For me, the game started functioning when I upgraded my firewall software. I'm not certain if it is related. The other thing I made at the same time was to include exclusion rule for my AV software to skip the game folder entirely before installing the game. But I recall the firewall doing the trick. That is if the game crashes exactly like mine. Otherwise it's a different situation.
Another observation that works for me, and might work for some other gamers:

I usually edit the game's resolution to make the game scale better on my widescreen monitor. When I edit the config file *after* the CO8-mod is applied, the game keeps crashing. However, when I edit the file *before* I do this, it sort of works. (Sort of: still need to empty the movie-folder).

So, here's my order in wich I install things:

- Install the vanilla game
- Make sure it runs
- Edit the game's config file to set my resolution
- Apply the Co8-modpack
- Move the game's movies to a new folder (I keep an empty 'movies'-directory.)
- Start the game

I've used RAD Video Tools to watch some of the movies. (Intro, arrival at Hommlet etc.). These vary according to your party's alignment.

Just as an FYI- disabling the intro movies with the Co8 front end caused my game to not load completely- would just hang after i tried to Load Game. Enabling the movies (and then skipping them manually) seems to work just fine.
I dont understand why they'd sell a game that doesnt work with over half the users out there, I want my money back I am pissed, I tried everything everyone else did and still crashes

Could you describe the profile you made for ToEE? I'm not sure what to do regarding the "D3DOverrider".
