Most if not all of the times I hear talk about "System Shock", people always mean System Shock 2. No wonder there are a lot of misconceptions with the two games since people don't seem to even know the original game exists, then proceed to attribute its details to the sequel.

Oh, so the GOG version does use NewDark? Brilliant.

By tweaking the cam_ext cfg file it should be possible to revert to the original DirectX6 renderer instead of using the new DirectX9 one with all the new bells and whistles, I assume doing that would allow you to play it on very old systems again.

Old schoolers with poopy notebooks dare to differ, some of us want simplicity without any new features/graphical changes & such... Everything is updated, improved & so forth, it's not even funny when they only work on super-duper-über-winz0r -computers, making everything "BETTER".

And that's exactly what NewDark does, it makes things simply work. Without it, the game is almost impossible to run on any modern OS or hardware, even low spec hardware. It doesn't actually change anything about the game's content, it's still the same System Shock 2 that came out in 1999, complete with 1999-era graphics. It does increase the abilities of the game's engine, such as allowing to run it at higher screen resolutions and allowing modders to add higher polycount models, but it is otherwise the same exact game. Besides, those minimum specs are less than what a computer would have had 8-10 years ago. If your machine is lower than that, the problem is not GOG, the problem is you need to upgrade badly. Frankly I find it hard to believe that you are still running a machine with a less than 1.8GHz processor, 2GB of RAM and a DirectX 9 compatible video card/chipset.

There really isn't a way to make a game that's at the same time able to run on a very old crappy hardware, and on the newest cutting-edge behemoths. If you're still running a very old system and want to play SS2, I guess you're better off buying the original CD copy on eBay or something. The point of GOG is making old games able to run on MODERN hardware. And let's be honest - if you're on a netbook, you're not really an old-schooler, right?

Granted, I'm running the game on a pretty weak laptop (2Ghz, 2GB of ram and integrated Intel graphics with shared memory) and it runs great in maxed out resolution. So what's the problem?

the game should run ok on a netbook as well. just try it.

the dx6 safemode is actually slower than dx9 , so it should only be used when dx9 absolutely fails to run.

That's what DosBOX was created, but this GOG version goes too far on MODERN computers in my opinion. The funny thing is that... Notebooks do not have CD drives... I'd prefer have the original game with extras, instead of downloading a pirated version -> Without copy protection or any hussle. You're taking it a bit too far TBH... As I told you, it's ran LOADS of new games with the help of 3rd party software, such as Second Sight with 3D-Analyze, oddly enough...

Minilaptops/notebooks/netbooks with integrated video cards, not all of us want the high-end puters which can do cooking & babysitting for oneself. No offense.

If someone could confirm it working on an old-style computer would be nice...
