I have to turn it off. Kinda makes the game less scary than it already is. Other than that, amazing game.

I sort of agree that the music on the first level maybe isn't the right fit, mood-wise, but you're going to miss out on a lot of great tunes if you turn it off for the whole game. The and [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XXZ9IpZoxk]Operations themes in particular are excellent.

The music itself is quite good, but I definitely agree that it doesn't always fit with the game. 'specially when it gets pumping.
Its fine as long as you don't veiw system shock 2 as a horror game, I honestly wouldn't. Its more Action RPG

Yeah, I turned it waaay down--almost muted. I found when I was most enjoying the game was when it was just the sound of my footsteps echoing down corridors, ears straining to hear any nearby enemies and where they might be waiting. Then I'd cross over into an area where the music would kick in and just...ugh. Atmosphere ruined.

I got annoyed with the music during the medical/crew quarters section, and finally turned it down to almost nothing in Engineering (where IMHO it's even more obnoxious). That kind of music is better for something like Doom where you're fearlessly mowing down enemy after enemy, not the careful "picking your battles" type of combat I've been doing in SS2. Nor is it well suited to listening to while you're trying to listen to the audio logs...it drowned out the dialogue more than once for me before I finally turned it down.

I was surprised to see so many people on here praising the game's music...I'm sure it's okay to listen to on its own, but when heard in-game it pretty much ruins the game's atmosphere for me.
I like Brosius Score a lot - it reminds me on Clint Mansells Score for the excellent "Pi" - movie.
The score is great, it really sets the tone of the sci-fi / cyberpunk theme imo. I don't really think of it as a horror game, the horror is certainly part of it, just not the main part or even what makes it good.
Sure some of the tracks may be a little too "perky" for a survival-horror game, but if you turn off the music entirely, you're missing creeping around the halls of the Von Braun to , [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xG5EmRit0W8]this, , [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OFAHCIjh0Y]this, , [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcaQaoqJ5vs]this, and this.

Agreed, I certainly don't see it as merely a horror game more of an survival-RPG-sci-fi with some horror elements. That's why I think the music fits perfectly. No way in hell I'd ever play the game with the music off; it's part of the experience imo.

The music is fantastic! I think it fits really well, this isn't a straight up horror game at all. Also some of the tracks ARE really creepy so I don't know why you'd turn the music off. They put that music there to set a tone but its seems its not the tone you wanted.
If you turn the music off you're playing the game wrong. It's a cyberpunk game with a cyberpunk soundtrack. If the music makes it "less scary", well, so be it. That's the way the designers intended. A lot of people on this board seem to be confused on this aspect; games aren't about what you think or expect them to be, they are about what they are about.
I do love the music, and think Brosius did a great job, but I've been thinking about creating an alternative soundtrack for the game - even if it's just ripping music from other horror games and substituting it.

I won't deny that it would detract from the cyberpunk aesthetic (is there such a thing as scary cyberpunk music?) but I'd be interested to see what could be done if one wanted to use the soundtrack to emphasise the horror instead.

It won't be that easy-- several of the music tracks are composited in real-time from a set of musical snippets that together comprise the entire song. Although there are resource files that control this that could theoretically be updated to allow a single file to be used as the song.

Holy strawman argument, Batman. By that token, if a person adds a mod to change/improve the graphics of, say, Morrowind then they're playing the game "wrong" and not the way the devs intended it. Really?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You may think the music is perfect and an integral part of the game experience. I don't. Neither of us is wrong, nor are we playing the game wrong. I'm simply playing the game how I personally prefer, which I'm entitled to do given that it's a single-player game purchased with my own money and installed on my personal PC.

You're quite right, realised this earlier - got ahead of myself.

Guess I should actually familiarise myself a bit more with how the game files etc fit together if this is to happen.

(as is probably incredibly obvious, I'm not exactly the modding type :D )
