My advice is to complete deck 5 before deck 4. There are only baby spiders on deck 5 and laser pistols can easily handle those. Thare are also many EMP rifles just lying around. When you get maintenance to 6 you can go back to your modded EMP rifle.

In the long run you'll need to use psi or exotic weapons to deal with those spiders.

Not really. Shooty bang bang or even swingy thwack weapons take care of them just fine.

If you can use swingy thwack weapons on spiders without getting bitten half the time, you are better than me.

Standard weapons kill spiders okay. But if you get this far in the game with only one point in standard, then there are better options.
I'll admit that taking on spiders with a wrench is an advanced skill. You really have to circle-strafe around them and keep an eye out for their attack animations.

Finally finished deck 4 and working on locating the pass code for the transmitter on deck 5 right now.
Electron cascade and that fireball spell are in my spell list now.
I'm gonna try to do what i can to take other suggestions but for now gonna focus
on increasing psi and psi points then take stock from there.
