Hi everybody!
I have a question (Sistem Shock 2) regarding the Repair skill. Is there a way to modify any files somehow to improve it? Personally, I don't like the fact that this skill is not very relevant; And the most annoying thing, regardless of the level of the Repair, the repaired weapon will always be with a state of 2 out of 10, that is - a maximum of 10 shots - and repaired again.
Is there a way to make the skill more useful in this regard? Well, for example, if Repair is 3, then the state will become 3 out of 10, and so on. It seems to me that in this case, the Repair will become much more relevant.
All I could find out was that the game stats / parameters are hidden in the .gam file, and that requires the ShockEd program. But I still can't find a manual that will paint this (usually work with 3D graphics is signed there). Maybe I'm just wrong? Help me please.

Improving the condition of weapons requires maintenance tools.

Repair does NOT require maintenance tools, so making Repair also perform maintenance would give players infinite free maintained weapons.
they really just should have called the skill Unjamming. anyway, Repair Relevant Maker.

Thx, useful and interesting mod, but...what can i do to to solve my problem? How can I improve my repair skill so that it also improves the condition of the weapon, and this can be customized?
I'm 99% sure you would have to write a custom script in the squirrel language.

Is there a file for the character's skills? I dont know any programming languages.
For example, there is a Data folder, and there are extensions there (.mis, .res, .bin, .osm), do your know how to open them (any software)? I suspect there is an answer to my question.

As said above, making Repair better would made Maintenance useless instead and would be mostly cosmetic difference at the end.

What is your goal anyway? If you're afraid of running out of maintenance tools, there is more than enough of them. Or you can slow down or even disable weapon damaging in config files.

I am not afraid of anything. I just draw your attention to the fact that the repair is, as the commentator from above aptly put it - "Unjamming".
The maximum I suggest is that Repair 6 repairs 4 out of 10. I think this is more than enough for this skill.
I don't want to turn the game into an easy walk, or kill the meaning of other skills. But I want to try it.
1) Where are the weapon configs and how to open them?
1.1) If there are weapon configs, so there are skill configs?

short answer - you would have to get into SS2 modding, and you would have to go in deep. check systemshock.org and start reading tutorials.

long answer - mis files are the maps, they can be opened in the ShockED editor (gam files, which is the gamesys, can be edited there as well), bin are the objects which can be opened in blender if you have the proper plugin, osm are the vanilla script files which cannot be edited, res are auxiliary files which can be ignored. textures can be opened in any texture editor, gimp for example.

weapon settings can be found in the gamesys, which will get loaded and can be edited if you open any map that uses the gamesys in question. some skill setting can be found there as well, but how they actually work is controlled by scripts - above average knowledge of SS2 editing is required if you want to mess around everything that has been mentioned, and coding skills are required if you want to change how the skills work.

Well, how can I open and modify .gam files with ShockEd? Can you give me a hint, or can there be any guidance on this?
there is no easy way to ShockED. here you go.

Well, okay, thx. I will not close the topic yet.

Well if you pick a weapon on "Shoddy" state despite the repairs it will eventually brake. There´s specific spots where weapons on Superb or good condition are located, while you reach those the idea is to evade confrontation since most enemies respawn there's no real benefit on shooting them... when you could actually slice them in 2 with the saber which is much better way to dispatch the enemies.

I think the essense of the sshock games is giving the player this constant sense of danger. Even the weakest worm can take you out if you are not careful. "Modding out" the feature it's the equivalent of Doom -> Brutal Doom that completly changes the way the game works on it's core.

I'm arriving late to this thread and I don't know if I may be understanding the OP's question a bit differently, but I'll post my two cents. The answer you *may* be looking for, within the normal game rules and without cheating or editing the game, is that you need to improve your Maintenance skill, to be able to improve weapon condition once they are Repaired. Two separate skills : Repair to "fix" broken weapons/devices so that they are simply functional again, and Maintenance to improve the condition of weapons which are already working.

(That said, I don't necessarily agree with the game design decision to make those two separate skills, but...there we have the situation.)
