Okay so I just tried to play the game with my girlfriend over my Uni connection and discovered that no matter what, the Uni VPN IP would always be priority despite my best efforts to change priorities. However, Windows uses something called the "Metric" system to automatically adjust priorities of network adapters.

So, what I did was the following:

Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings > Adapter Properties (Wireless or Wired) > IPv4 Properties > Advanced > Checked Automatic Metric

Fired up SS2, and now my Hamachi IP is present! To all those that this helps, have fun co-operating!

Why use hamachi? When you can use jest normal portforwarding and connection like with any other game like Half-Life and what not? Unless your unable to portforward
Well if I had access to my Universities central network settings that'd be pretty sweet, but no.

Secondly, I've never been able to get the multiplayer to work through port forwarding, just never happened even with all the correct ports forwarded and triggered.

Well all parties that are trying to connect need to have the same ports forwarded. That is probly what you encountered was 1 of yall probly portforwarded and the other(s) didnt so youd definitely always still encounter problems then.

& well ya its understandable to use hamachi then if at a university and using their connection, tho I highly do not recommend that for an MP game. As those networks usually easily get slammed with high traffic rates 90% of the day which kills your game's ping/connection overall. So if it comes to it go and buy yourself a portable network. They are available.
Well funny you say that, because whilst me and my girlfriend were stuck on relayed tunnel the game played just fine, apart from the whole "game crashed because I pressed Alt-T" part
