I would like to know what people who are actually playing this version of System Shock are experiencing regarding system requirements. The requirements seem absurd. What kind of problems are you guys playing the game having with operating systems, sound, video, etc.? Is anyone playing it successfully on less than the stated system requirements? Do higher resolutions make any difference?

the 640*480 res mode should run on pretty much anything, but the requirements rise exponentially in higher resolutions.
Just noticed the system requirements as a result of this forum thread and now I'm worried it won't run on my old machine. However, I know that I've run SSP in the past, which is why I bought this version here on GOG.

So, is there any chance that I'll be able to run the Enhanced Edition which is built on top of SSP (especially considering that SSP has now been taken down) or does this mean that I'd better hold on to whatever version of SSP I still have as this new one won't run on my machine?

My specs are:

Windows Vista Ultimate x64
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @3.16GHz
4GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia GTX260
EE is using a advanced version of the SHLINK mod/loader, which is faster and better than dgvesa and dosbox that has been used by SSP. SS1 EE is currently the best version of SS1 that can be played.
I'm running on a Dual-core 2.5 Ghz WinXP machine with no issues whatsoever (so far). EE in 1024x768 and DOS : 800x600 (with Mouselook patch. I find 1024x768 in the DOS version starts to run a little too slowly and makes the mouse cursor extremely slow)

I have never understood where GOG comes up with these ridiculous System Requirements. Seeing such requirements for a 21-year-old game is utterly laughable and my last debacle with the Support Department included a ludicrous suggestion of installing Visual C 2013 for a 17-year-old game (facepalm)

In theory, the game should install and run on any system still in service that supports the GOG Installer or GOG Galaxy. However, a lot of people are experiencing crashes and problems with the Enhanced Edition.

If you are running at least XP on a computer that can handle the OS effectively, you should be able to play the game. I have an old laptop running XP with a 1.6Ghz processor that is experiencing no real troubles.
it's called better safe than sorry. also, with dosbox and/or the hires hacks, the requirements can change drastically.
I was just playing it on a old 1.7 ghz duo-core for about 30 - 40 min at my desktop resolution (1366x768), I encountered no performance issues until steam or battle.net started updating something in the background, which only made the sound stutter a bit.

It runs on my aging machine quite fine so far. :D

Managed to play through most of the first floor, exploring the map, killing mutants and cyborgs, and such. Don't know what the framerate was but it played well enough to be enjoyable. My first attempt at the game many years ago (with a vanilla game running in Win98) was short lived as I couldn't get used to the control system. My second attempt, with SSP, didn't last long as I just didn't give it enough of a chance, but it worked. This time, though, I have already done more of it than I had before. Loving the mouselook toggle.

Thanks. Does it look much different on higher resolutions?

I have a dual core laptop I might want to try it on, but it's a Celeron. Your dual core isn't a Celeron is it?

So the controls are better in the Enhanced Version? I know the controls were not great in the original.

yes, better controls windows compatibility and higher resolutions are pretty much the entire point of EE. see the stickied FAQ.
I'm running the game on win xp (EE. Not classic). So far so good.
Well, it seems like people here don't seem to be having too many problems with system requirements but on the other thread asking about people's experiences with game play people are all over the place as far as how things are working for them. I really appreciate all of the input.

Win XP SP3, 2Ghz (single core!) here, all is fine!
But I played not yet so far, just tested it a bit yesternight. Will post again if I discover any tech issues.
