Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good game. It's just that the game takes itself so seriously even during some of its goofier elements. For instance in the beginning of the game, if you choose the marines, all of the stations have names like wake island. There are more examples but I don't want to put in too many spoilers. The only part I was kind of scared at was when I first got into the cargo bay. At that point I really couldn't deal with some of the enemies yet.
Hmm...I don't think it really takes itself too seriously. There are quite a few subtle jokes in the game. My personal favorite is the elevator music. The game can't be all gags, or it would destroy its own credibility.

?

I don't think that would have been done for the LOLz, as the kids would say. Seems fairly plausible that a future Marine base might be named after a historic Marine base...

Don't really get your point...

Heh. Unmodded SS2 does not actually have elevator music. It's an (unused) wav file that was 'restored' by ADAOB and perhaps other mods- so it wasn't part of the release game. System Shock 1 did have elevator muzak though.

Things like the ridiculous prices for the replicator in the movie theatre on the other hand, the 'Bon Chance' ('good luck') bar and some of the posters were absolutely deliberate.

Ahh...good to know. The elevator muzak should have been left in the original release. It's hilarious.

I noticed the prices in the theater and the Westworld posters. Since I've actually seen that movie, I did get a kick out of that.
and you haven't even opened the editor - there is a lot of puns going on there as well, for example, the signal that triggers the scene where a fusion bot smashes through the wall is named "koolaid". the self-diagnostic and repair module's internal name is "cheeseborger". etc..

The Westworld poster is a SHTUP change. In the original game it's a poster for some made-up movie called "Robot Land".
The camp & kamikaze droid got me laughing (and dead many times!). The way it 'minces' and requests that you don't shoot - all in a posh voice.

Heh, yeah. That reminds me of the Shifter mod for Deus Ex. Some people are under the impression that the 'Public Hygiene XP Bonus' you get for flushing toilets was part of the original game.

Heh. Well, I'm sure the vanilla game has some funny things about it too.

Many of the item descriptions are quite good. Please tell me what mod they're from.

Okay, I'll use my psychic powers to determine which item descriptions you're talking about and which mods you have installed.

Sorry, that was a joke. Or maybe you knew that. Heh.

Disruption Grenades have a funny description.
Sigh. Sounds as though I should be leery of installing any of these gameplay/graphics improving mods as they add a noticeable amount of their own content to the game.
no, unless you go for full gamesys mods like Secmod.
What v47 said, really, but with a bit more info:

ADAOB changes the gameplay balance significantly to make certain skills less overpowered or more useful, but doesn't change much else at all except for fixes. The muzak was added as a bit of a homage to SS1 (which is presumably why IG included it in the first place, even if it's unused). It's certainly a different experience from vanilla, but it's mainly just better balanced and with more bugs fixed. SHTUP only upgrades existing textures and has no effect on gameplay or story design at all.

Personally, if I were having my first play through now I wouldn't use ADAOB but have the vanilla experience first and leave ADAOB for later, but that's personal preference and not based on ADAOB's content. SHTUP and most other graphical mods are fine to use any time and just make the game look better.
