I used all the recommended mods from systemshock.org. The game looked and played great. I can't say that it's preferable to unmodded for a first play, but I can testify that I don't regret my decision one bit.

I haven't beaten it yet (Going through System Shock first before continuing on the second, it's a personal quirk of mine to go in order for many video game series...) and I have yet to experience quite a lot of it, but I will say though that those darn monkey enemies make me lose it every time I see them. It's just that they use these sound library monkey noises that I have always heard in various cartoons growing up, and it is hard to take them seriously with those noises being associated to light hearted stuff I have viewed.
