Having the same problem. Any solutions?
I have the same problem. I remember the music on the original to be CD audio (playable in a CD player). Maybe that's the root of the problem…?
Can anyone confirm that music plays during missions with the GOG version on PC?

Edit: I've checked the contents of the package and the music is there, saved as .ogg files.

Looks like it.

While the music files are there, I couldn't find any configuration file that would define them as audio tracks that DOSbox could use. I'm pretty sure something is missing there…

Edit (again):
Hmmm, that doesn't seem to be the problem. Starting the game calls the BXSTART.BAT that mounts SWARS.INST

imgmount d -t iso -fs iso "swars.inst"
c:
cls
call play.bat
exit
SWARS.INST is a cue sheet that contains the paths to the audio tracks:

FILE "swars.gog" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE1/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00
FILE "sound\swars02.ogg" MP3
TRACK 02 AUDIO
INDEX 01 00:00:00
FILE "sound\swars03.ogg" MP3
TRACK 03 AUDIO
INDEX 01 00:00:00
FILE "sound\swars04.ogg" MP3
TRACK 04 AUDIO
INDEX 01 00:00:00
I'm at an impasse here :(

I deleted the cls command in BXSTART.BAT to see whats going on and noticed this error before the game's Intro started:

Disk image file could not be found.
Check that the path is correct and the image is accessible.
Anyone got an idea how to fix this? I thought it may be case sensitive, but that didn't do the trick.

I don't actually own the game. Where is BXSTART.BAT in relation to the other files/directories? I know for some Windows setups GOG uses multiple .conf files. For Mac they usually use a boxer standalone setup.

BXSTART.BAT and SWARS.INST are both located in C:\SWARS, so theoretically it should work. I also tried changing the mount line to imgmount d -t iso -fs iso ".\swars.inst", but to no avail.

Long shot, but what are SWARS.INST permissions?

Permissions are alright, but I finally made it work by checking how Dungeon Keeper handles the CD audio.

The solution is quite simple:

Just rename the SWARS.INST to SWARS.CUE and edit the BXSTART.BAT accordingly. Boom!! - music plays!

Thanks for your input :)

Excellent. Suggest you report your solution to GOG.

Thanks a lot.
Hi,

Sorry to be an absolute pain and a noob, but I am having the same issue on my mac with SWARS. I had faith in your walkthrough as it looked to be helpful. However, after following it step by step, I am still having the issue of no music playing.

Funny thing is, when I run the PC version using Crossover, the music works fine but I can't get it in full screen. I just can't seem to catch a break with this game.

Is there anything I could have missed or overlooked etc?

Thank you.
