I'm trying not to give a lot away in terms of story, but at one part, early in the game, you find a voice cylinder inside a tomb which I assume holds some sort of message. A bit later, you find a device in an office which is capable of playing the cylinder. As soon as I pop the cylinder into the device, the game stops. I alt-tab out to the desktop and the message "Insert the DVD" is shown with the options of Retry and Cancel. Retry does nothing and Cancel shuts down the game.
Is anyone else having this issue or am I special?

k1234511: figured it out, created new folder in the video file and named it AN. Then I copied C2, C5, and C10 to the AN folder. It worked
Thank you.
This is still happening. Come on GOG, easy fix!
Hi !
I'm using the french version, for those who the solution above doesn't work (creating folder FR or maybe another language), i had to actually create an "AN" folder in order for it to work (the video's still in french)... go figure ^^
Edit : realizing someone already mentioned it. Well, it's still valid to say it twice just in case xD

Yep a shame it wasn't fixed earlier, i thought for a second i wouldn't be able to make it work !
My gratitude to the people who helped in this topic :)

Hi,
german version here - still the same issue - after four years!
Please fix these things, if I buy a game on GOG, I expect it to be tested. I don't save frequently on adventure games, and I'm a little bit pissed right now to be forced to repeat all my actions up to this point because of a improperly working nocd.

edit: for the german version you'll need to create a folder called AN too (strange enough) and you'll have to delete the first part of the movie's names (the "DE").

I am having the same problem! I already tried reading the solutions posted in earlier threads but I do not understand find the file they are talking about. I don't understand fixing computer files and never thought I'd need to do something like that when purchasing the game. If anyone can explain to me step by step how to fix this problem in a way I can understand I would be so grateful! I'm bummed I'm stuck here.
Can someone explain to me how to find the file directory? When I look in my Syberia folder I don't see any installation folder and if I search files in my computer I don't find a Syberia\video file. I don't know where to find it. I only see the setup icon, the game manual, and a readme file. I don't know where to go to ad a new file. I'm so confused.

Right-click the game's shortcut (in the Start menu or on desktop) and select "Open file location" (or whatever that option is called). In the folder that opens there'll be a "Video" folder with those files inside.
Thank you, I found it. :) Who knew..

lbz123: Chiming in with others to say I just played this game in May 2014 and had the same issue with the voice cylinder causing a crash. Fix described in this thread worked perfectly. As some have stated, at this point the files do not appear to have to be renamed, but you do need to create the new folder and copy the files into it. Note, I also played Syberia 2 this month and had no issues with that game.

Wish this had been addressed before purchase since it is such a long standing problem, but really appreciate folks here finding and sharing the way to fix it. Thanks.
I just downloaded the game yesterday (Oct 2014) and also ran into a crashing issue. Interestingly enough my files HAD been properly named from the get-to... I still had to create the new folder though. Not really sure what's up with that. Glad others have done trouble shooting on it. :)

I will also say, though, that this is the first time I've run into this problem. I think it must be an issue isolated to the English language version. I've downloaded/installed/played GOG's French language version a couple times over the past couple of years with no problems whatsoever.

As of Nov 13, 2014 this problem still exists. I am playing English version.

Solutions described in forum worked.

I am thinking it is not such an easy fix due the many languages involved. Very glad GoG has been trying and very glad this forum is provided for the many smart users to help figure things out. Thanks Smart Users and GoG!

It seems the current solution is to find the installation location of your game:
YnK said : "Right-click the game's shortcut (in the Start menu or on desktop) and select "Open file location" (or whatever that option is called). In the folder that opens there'll be a "Video" folder with those files inside."

Create new Folder called AN inside Video folder.

Make copy of C2_hansannab.syb; C5_hansanna.syb; C10_hansanna.syb inside that new folder leaving original files where they are in Video folder. Languages other than english will likely have a two letter identifier before these file names.

If you are using language other than English, remove the first two language identifiers that should precede the three "hansann" files mentioned above from the copies you made in the AN folder. Then try again.

Save often!

(Patches could possibly be made specific to each language available that would copy and rename the files after initial install... or maybe a generic patch as simple as a batch file that would copy each instance of these files for all languages into the new AN folder. The generic patch would fail for the files of the other languages not installed but should continue and succeed for the files actually installed for whatever language was actually installed... Anyone notice which languages were available in the initial install, hence what two letter prefixes on the three files in question?)

This issue persists in 2014. I'd like to thank mich9l6ngelo for figuring out a work-around 4(!) years ago, and also to express my disappointment in the gog quality-control team. Come on guys, you're better than this.

Thank you mate!!!

I played this game at once an I remember I couldn't finish it cause it was crashed in similar way on another point..... and I have nothing to do except to put it aside....... Hope this time I could finish it :)
I will try this fix and see if it fixes this issue. I do wish that by December 2014 this would have been fixed as it appears to have been a problem for quite some time.

Thank you very much to previous players for their advice and help.
4 years, 4 pages of people having problems - still no GOG-workaround or patch for an obvious early issue (the first town takes 20 minutes if you're testing), only a "make-do and mend" courtesy of good people in the community. I expect better for my money and loyalty GOG, especially as this seems to be an issue with FMV/in-game scenes with a few games (Longest Journey is still unworkable for a lot of users).

Happier Note:
Thank you to everyone who found a way to get the games working properly and then put the info online for the rest of us, it's appreciated! Have a great holiday season and Happy Gaming! :D
Purchased Syberia in January 2015 . Problem of the voice cylinder apparently not solved.
Using the English version and I am having the voice cylinder problems previously identified. When I insert the voice cylinder from inside the tomb into the player in the office the game freezes. I followed the procedures identified on the community discussions site: created folder Syberia\Video\AN and copied files C2_hansannab.syb; C5_hansanna.syb; C10_hansanna.syb into that new folder leaving original files where they are in Video folder. This did not work. Looked in the debug.log and noticed that it included a line: “Using data file language: 'AN'”, followed by the line “Playing cinematic 'Intro_dc.syb'.” I searched for this file intro_dc.syb and could not find it.
Any thoughts to fix this problem of the voice cylinder not working?
