So i always get the error "error opening xxxx.avi" when i try to play a mission (last restort mod thankfully decativates the intro movies so i atleast get into the main menu)

i tried:
- replacing the movie files as suggested in many other forums
-Reinstalling Directx
-reinstalling and testing all sort of Codec packs.

thanks in advance for everyone trying to help

best regards.

It is strange that some people have trouble with the movies. There are a certain tiny percentage of people that can't get the movies to work no matter what they do. I wish I could get my hands on a machine like yours just to experiment and test it, lol.

Have you tried also putting "swat.exe" in Windows XP 3 compatibility mode and perhaps also give it admin rights?

The other question I have is this: I assume when you replaced the movies you used the XVID version that I made? If so did you try double clicking a movie to see if Windows opened Media Player and played the movie properly outside Swat 3? It is important to test that the XVID movie works in Windows before you even get to the game.
hello Slippery_Jim

For your first suggestion i tried as you mentioned it still no success
and yeah i can play them in my windows media player.

Do you want more system information or maybe a DxDiag report? maybe this could give you som research value even if you don't have a system like that.

best regards.
Just to confirm you also tried giving swat.exe admin rights?

Have you tried running the game with your anti-virus temporarily disabled to see if the anti-virus is somehow interfering?

A few basic questions:

1) I see you are Windows 7 64bit. I assume you have it up to date (SP1 installed and all newest updates)?

2) Is the Windows account you use when playing Swat 3 a regular user account or an admin account?

3) What path do you have Swat 3 installed to?

yes i tried with admin rights too 1 time together and 2 times sperately

as for your questions:

1: im running windows 7 ultimate SP 1 64 Bit

2: i can not surely answer this is there a way to check this?

3: today i reinstalled it to C:\GOG Games\Swat 3 yesterday it was G:\Games\Swat 3

best regards
When you installed Windows if you didn't create multiple user accounts then you are probably on the admin account. If you logout of windows to change user and there isn't any other user accounts then the one you are using is the admin.

As for the install path the reason why I asked is that I always wondered if it was a good thing or a bad thing to install Swat 3 to the Programs (x86) folder. So far I haven't experimented that much with it or reached any conclusion. I am no expert on Windows.

Another question: did you use the GOG.com stand-alone installer or the Galaxy client to install the game?
i see, well currently i use gog galaxy to install my games i will try the stand alone installer and just for testing purpose i will also try installing it to the programs folder

Before you uninstall the galaxy client version try this:

* uninstall the last resort mod first ... OR ... use the toggle switch on the Last Resort Launcher to turn it off and then choose SAVE AND EXIT)

* try running the verify feature on the Galaxy client. It will check to see if some files are corrupt or not installed.

* Once the game has been verified see if vanilla Swat 3 runs

The only bad thing about the verify feature on the Galaxy Client is that it replaces your swat.cfg file with a basic version so you lose your key bindings. It also replaces the XVID movies the last time I checked. Still it is a good way to see if you can get vanilla Swat 3 running after using the VERIFY feature.

PS: when you do re-install the game put it in the "Programs (x86)" and not the regular "Programs" folder.

i know XD,

well as far as verifing was going it wasn't succesful, Reinstalling both ways didn't work too.
I wish I could swear in this forum right now.

Okay will think about this tonight.
hey

just wanted to check in if you came up with everything yet?
Are you using dgVoodoo or not? Worth trying just in case its directx wrapper bypasses whatever causes the issue and since it's the optimal way to play the game anyway you're not losing anything if you don't have it yet.

didn't work. thanks thou
Hi Kralle5,

Sorry about that but work got in the way and distracted me last few days. Let me get back to you by the end of this weekend. I recall reading other methods but I have to locate that thread on another forum.
Okay one suggestion is to try an app called DxWnd.

The maker of the app reports that he has several fixes for Swat 3 related to this movie crash issue.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

Still looking for more ideas...
