I've already submitted a help request for this, so it's more of an advisory to others until I hear back (though if anyone wants to offer advice in the meantime, feel free); after purchasing Super Neptunia RPG I downloaded the standalone installer but the game would not launch. The screen would go black for a few seconds before the program closed itself but would not go any further.

I poked around the game's folder and found steam_api64.dll in the "plugins" area alongside Galaxy, so I suspect that the game is attempting to launch via Steam; neither deleting the file nor creating a steam_appid text file seemed to help.

Hopefully GOG will fix this before long, but in the meantime anyone looking to play this one without a launcher might want to proceed with caution, unless there's a workaround I'm missing.
Came here to complain about this. I see I'm not the only one. :<
I got the same problem as well. Using the offline installer, the game doesn't start at all. It crashes immediately. I don't use Galaxy so I don't know if it would work with it.

I doubt it's because of the Steam DLL. Others games on GOG still have Steam files in them, but they usually are inactives.

Does not work with Galaxy either, Have the same issue and use GoG Galaxy, and have tried launching with and without. Shows it launching, show cloud syncing, then bails to desktop.
Not sure if anyone else has been in touch with GOG support, but they've been attempting to help me for a while now, and have made a number of suggestions that I've tried (use Galaxy's "repair" function, reinstall Visual C++, run as an administrator, clean reboot, etc.), but so far nothing has worked, and the person assisting me says they're unable to reproduce the issue I'm having.

They also suggested I file a help request with IFI itself, which I did, but it's been a week since then and I've yet to hear back.

Thanks for the update.

I haven't personally contacted GOG since you already submitted a help request for this. I believe there's no point in flooding them, especially if they're already trying to resolve the issue, but I'm willing to contact them if it might help. I tried a few basic things as well, but nothing worked. I did notice a few error messages logged in Event Viewer when the game crashes, but they're generic errors codes that didn't help me figure out what's wrong. There's likely some sort of incompatibility, but who knows with what.

I bought all the other RPG from the recent batch by Idea Factory, and this is the only one that doesn't work. I wonder what is different with this particular game.
I bought a few of the other contemporary IF releases as well, and in like manner this game is the only one I've had any issues with. Wonder what the heck it could be...

Same problem with the offline installer, I have already played the steam version of this game so I know that it is not my computer's problem, the game is made with Unity so look in the path "\ AppData \ LocalLow \ Artisan Studios \ Super Neptunia ™ RPG "the output_log and shows me the following:

Found Xinput1_4.dll.

Apparently the game cannot load those libraries, but when I search in said game path those libraries do not exist .. maybe that is the problem, try to see if the same thing appears to you

Yeah, I get the same. The DLLs doesn't have the exact same names, though. In fact, the filenames changes each time I try to start the game. Temporary files, maybe? Anyway, there are no files in that folder, only more subfolders, and none are created while the game starts.

Followed the path you specified and the output log displays the same trio of "fallback handler could not load" lines as you described. I actually mentioned this topic to the support person assisting me, just in case nobody over there has caught wind of the discussion.
As there been any development on this?

GOG support is obviously trying, but unable to resolve the issue so far. Since they cannot even reproduce the issue, I can understand why they have trouble. Being a programmer myself, I know how difficult it is to find the cause of a non-reproducible bug, so I'm not blaming them. IFI will likely be more able to find the problem and fix it. Did they ever replied? Would it be useful if more of us reach out to them as well?

On my side, I tried using Process Monitor to find out what could be triggering the crash. All I could see is that the game crashed immediately after accessing either Windinet.dll or Galaxy64.dll or Steam_api64.dll. I though that maybe it's trying, and failing, to access some online resource. Since I use a firewall, I tried deactivating it temporarily, but no change. Anyway, this probably doesn't mean much.

According to the errors logged in EventViewer, the crashes happened in KERNELBASE.DLL, with errors codes 0xc0000005 and 0xe06d7363. Apparently, those basically means that there's an unhandled error, which is why it ended up being handled by the kernel.

If you can, could you check if the Steam version still work for you? Maybe it worked back then when you played it, but not anymore? Installing the Steam version might also fix the issue, thus proving that the GOG build is missing something.
GOG support was actually just in contact with me yesterday, and offered a couple more things to hopefully narrow down the problem (reinstalling .NET 3.5 and Mono runtime), though unfortunately neither seemed to make a difference in my case. As you say, they are definitely doing what they can on this, I can't complain about their level of response up to this point.

On the other end of the spectrum, still radio silence from IFI several days after requesting a followup, I'm going to have to try them again in the next few days.

We might have finally hit a bit of a breakthrough; GOG support suggested I try running the game on a Windows 10 machine (my laptop is Windows 11) if I had access to one, and it just so happens my brother's laptop fit the bill. I installed the game on there and it started right up; just to see what would happen I copied the game's files back onto the original laptop after the successful run, but still couldn't run it on there. I should also mention that back when this process first started the support person had me try to run the game in Windows 7 compatibility mode, and that didn't work.

So I suppose I should ask if anyone here having trouble running the game is using Windows 10, and if not to see if they can test it on that OS, to see if we can nail down a bit of consistency here; there could have been some other variable between my bro's machine and mine that made the difference, but it'd be nice to know if the Windows version should remain on the list of possibilities.

I am trying to run it with windows 10, previously I played it by steam also from this same computer with windows 10 .. I am reinstalling my steam version of the game to try again (I have not played it for a year)
I use Windows 8.1.

Zero plans to upgrade to Windows 10 and Windows 11 because forced restarts suck.
