Anyone have a hint for how to get past the bear once you leave the compound? It should be obvious, but I'm just not seeing the correct combination of things to do and/or items to succeed.

Step by step:

Get the jar from the crate near the old boat. Flip the jar, tap it 3 times, flip it again and open. Fill the jar with te fluid from the carnivorous plant. Get the fungus from the tree besides old boat and get the box from the little cave between the boat and the crate. In the main area (sunny) combine the jar and the fungus - the fungus is on fire now. Enter the area on the right, with the cave with chilli. Use fire on the bush, collect chilli. Get the toy behind the rock left to the cave, solve it. The combination of colours on the back of the toy will give you the code to the case. Open the case, get the perfume, fill it with chilli. You're ready to face the bear now :-)

Thanks. I was missing the cave earlier. I've gotten past that now and think I'm close to the end, but it was hard to tell that there was another area that I was missing, thus the frustration. I had the general idea of what to do, but without seeing the cave, it's easy to miss the expected solution. :)
