Yeah, how do I know what my health is? Also, in the beginning when you find that first chest with the dagger and little rope things, what can I do to figure out what an item is?

I just started Stonekeep, so i'm still wondering about a few things myself...
I don't think there's a way to identify stuff. I think the stuff you pick up is identified on your Journal for you. You have to find the Journal first though, you don't have it at that point where you get the items from that first chest.
The vitality points, move your mouse to the upper right corner, when the cursor changes, left click to bring up the mirror and then click on the vitality bar. It will show you how many vitality points you have.
Edit: Just found the damn journal. If you still don't have it and you want it, check the att. pic for its location.
The rope things are 'good smelling roots' btw, they restore some vitality points.

If you click the B key you will set the Mirror rolled up in the upper right corner of the screen. The left blue jewel when clicked will drop down a window with your heatlth (Vitality). Hitting the M key will bring up the Mirror in all its glory.
According to the manual all objects will get an enrty in your journal so get that journal.
You need to find the Journal to make things really work in the game.
To activate the Mirror and the Inventory simply move the mouse to the Right Side of the Screen and you will see an icon of a mirror (little goldish square), or Scroll icon.
The mirror is upper right, the scroll is a little lower to the right. Here is an image of them opened.
Also see this thread for hints and tips. It also has the keyboard short cuts listed.
Good luck, and keep at it. It is a very fun game, and a real challenge at times.
