I absolutely loved this game when it came out and managed to beat it. I was stoked to play it again 15 years later to completion, but that time I used a walkthrough because I knew there were several things I had missed the first time around.

rmeakins: I needed a walkthrough. It's really fun to play but there are some points in the game which are just nasty - if you do certain things in the wrong way or the wrong order it can make the game unwinnable. I got up to the ice queen's realm on my own but then managed to lock myself out of the faerie realm, without knowing how I did it.

Did finish the game in the end though and was a bit disappointed with the ending, but the actual gameplay was great.
IIRC, I bought the game when it originally came out, and I think what stopped me from finishing on my own were a few bugs that turned out to be show stoppers. I eventually finished it with the aid of a walk-through, which is something I don't like doing, ever...! I had to purchase it again from Gog, however--it's a classic. Now that so many years have passed that I have little memory of the game I'm playing again--and I hope this time I can finish without a walk-through...;) I mean, I intend to do that!

The save-game system is a good one, considering the period, and if I am precise in naming my saves descriptively I should be able to back up without too much trouble, though, if that becomes necessary. Lots of fun--I'm running it with dosbox svn-daum through direct 3d and using a shader to improve the graphics somewhat, not to mention scaling it up to 1920x1200, and I'm also running it with the new dosbox_x64.exe program found in the latest version of dosbox svn-daum. It's the real gamer's dosbox, imo, and everyone who games with the plain-Jane dosbox that Gog usually ships should switch. (It helps to know the basics behind using dosbox, however.)
I finished the game years ago when it was new, but just got the GOG version.

I'd like to try svn-daum DOSBox. I downloaded it but I don't know how ti use it. Note - I'm no computer dummy (professional programmer for many years) but I don't see how to link svn to the game. Is there some trick?

Thanks,
sep

Faithful: Title says it all, but has anyone finished the game since buying from gog?

I have not, but would like to at some point.
Several many times :P Stonekeep is one of my favorite games.
SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG, but I just saw this today!...;) Enjoy!

Here's the link:

Do you have any Gog games that you bought pre-configured from Gog to run on DOSbox? If so, look at how those games are setup to use the anemic version of dosbox they ship with and from there figuring out how to integrate the SVN version should be no trouble for you...(that's how I actually did it in the beginning.) I'm going to attach my dosbox.config file for this game for you...Gog only accepts image files as attachments for some really weird reason, so when you download this be sure and rename it to dosbox.conf (leave the jpg extension off.) This is the actual dosbox config file (TXT file) I use with the game and SVN DOSbox. Put the svn-dosbox folder into your D:\Stonekeep directory (where D is your drive letter) and rename it to just DOSBOX. The dosbox.conf file also goes into your D:\Stonekeep directory.

Very important: In the TARGET box in the executable game icon you use to start Stonekeep, this is what should be there:

D:\Stonekeep\DOSBOX\dosbox_x64.exe -conf "..\dosbox.conf" -conf "..\dosbox.conf" -noconsole -c exit

The START IN box:

D:\Stonekeep\DOSBOX

Remember that "D" above is merely your own custom drive letter for wherever you have installed the game.

Double-clicking the icon should then run the game through my dosbox.conf (you can call it anything you want--say, dbStonekeep.conf if you want--just keep the executable icon for the game informed of any changes you make, etc.

And there you have it--the game is now tied to dosbox-svn instead of the mini-version that ships with the game! The options for the game configuration increase dramatically as you can see by my dosbox.conf above!

You can follow this model for all of your dosbox games--dosbox_x64.exe works with all of my dosbox games, save one, btw.

Okay, it took me even longer to reply. Sorry.

I just saw this so I have not tried it, but thank you so much for the info. I will be trying this out soon, if not tonight (got some other stuff to do).

Thanks again!

How did it go? I'm being honest in here since I can't even find where I am in this beautiful mess of a game.

Several times since the 90's and most recently... Last night actually. And while hunting for secrets that I didn't yet know (Like the secret inaccessible area with runic armor in the dwarven clanhall), I came across this forum. Lovely game, I always hope for a new game to follow this one. Possibly the same, or maybe open world. I hear there was a Stonekeep on the Wii, but I never got it and I heard it was awful.
