TunaOfDoubt: Works wonders, thanks! ;D
I wonder: couldn't presenting this workaround to the support team help them find a solution? It seems to be working for a number of people.
You're welcome :) Regarding your question: support was thinking if they could impement this workaround but it seems that they have decided against it because all they offered me in the end was a refund. It does seem that support has abandoned this game even though this bug occurs for quite some people so in my opinion it really should be worked on again.
I had a similar problem. At first, the game would only let me perform one action, after which the mouse cursor would disappear and I would have to Alt+F4.
I've tried the wrapper mentioned here to no avail. However, since screen transitions were instantaneous, I assumed it's a codec problem, so I replaced mine with the x64 version provided here: https://www.moviecodec.com/download-video-codecs/cinepak-11/
(caveat: it's a self-extracting RAR which I extracted manually using Winzip. The file may be infected with malware)

After replacing the codec, the mouse cursor no longer disappears - I can play the game. However, videos are still a black box, with and without the wrapper.

Any ideas?

Strange to see that codec replacement was able to fix the disappearing mouse cursor for you. But the main thing is that it helped :) Unfortunately afaik nobody does seem to have a solution for the black boxes instead of the video for now. Fun fact: this is something I would try to fix using a different codec but even this did not help so far. The only thing that MAY help would be to uninstall all other external codecs you may have on your system to prevent them interfering with the ones from the game. Usually things like codec paks i.e. are never good and should be avoided.

Seeing how many people still are experiencing game breaking bugs it is a wonder for me how this could pass GOG's quality control which they advertize as being extremely cautious. If nothing helps you can always refund the game but then again I don't think that would be the ideal solution to the problem.
My interpretation is that the mouse cursor would disappear for me because the game tried to play the scene transition movie, and probably hid the cursor itself due to the aesthetic aspect. Then presumably due to the codec library not fitting my computer, an error occurred somewhere along the way and the game never got to running the code to re-enable user control over it.

Having read your reply, it sounds like the most fitting way to run it might be to install the GOG version on a virtual machine to avoid "interference". I may try that at some point, since debugging codec issues is tedious and it would interrupt my normal computer use.

Thanks for all your efforts, MarkoH01.

It is a bit of work but if not for this game I would generally recommend to keep as few codecs as possible on the PC since they tend to make a problem whenever you don't need it. The only additional codecs I have installed in my PC are the few codecs bsplayer offers to download whoich are FFDShowtryouts, FLV decoder, RealMedia splitter, Haali media splitter, MPEG2 decoder and MPEG audio decoder. With those codecs (and the ones already installed in the OS) I can play every video and audio file I ever encountered so far.
Today I was trying to get another game to work which also had graphic issues on newer systems. In the end I found a fix and decided to try the fix on Starship Tatanic as well. Guess what - it worked. Hiere is what I did:

Download the newest version of dgvoodoo2 here
http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2.html
Extract all files from the folder MS into the game directory and run the game. If you like you can also configure several settings using the config üprogram which is included in the package. Remember that the config program needs every folder it is using to be added to its list otherwise it won't work (took me a while to figure this out).
Basically it is a DirectX Wrapper as well but maybe it is able to help those people for which my first solution did not work.

(In case seomebody was wondering: The other game I got to work with this is Tex Murphy: Overseer)

I've given this a go and it works great up to a point. I now get as far as the robot coming out of the ship and coming up to face the screen, then just as it seems about to cut to the first conversation I get a black screen and CTD.

Any suggestions how to get past this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hmmm...I just tested it and it crashed for me at the same time. Have you already tried my other solution posted here? . You could also try different versions of the dgvoodoo wrapper - I will try it as well. If I find something out I will post it here.

Edit: This version of dgvoodoo does not crash for me:

That version works great for me too... I'm having such a nostalgia trip right now. Thank you so much :)

Hi Antraxx,
since the dgVoodoo solution does seem to work for others maybe it is worth a try.
Download the version here: http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2_5.zip
and copy the content of the MS folder into the game directory. Let us know if this solves your issue.

There is a new version ofdgvoodoo and it's working even better wit ST - no crashes and no bugs so far.
Hey, thanks for thinking of me.

So, with the 2.52 voodoo, the game is almost playable. I can actually interact with things and the cursor is there and everything is peachy. I actually managed to insert the CD into the computer!

However, I still can't see any of the videos. If I change back to the original codec, the game doesn't work at all, and with the newer one I get a black box (for instance, when turning on the TV or when starting the computer).

Not shown videos HAS to be a codec problem. Maybe you can find a third one?
I'm about to try and get it working on macosx, however...
If you go to the original al starship titanic website there's a fix for the broken video issue, it's not a codec but a dll that isn't backwards compatible.

I hoped that the gog version would have addressed some of these problems.

In fact the dll (if it's the one I think you are talking of) is part of the codec (cinepak) and afaik GOG already has included this version. The dll is meant to make the game XP compatible though - could not find anything about MAC atm.
