Next equally useless reply from Support...

Hello,
This is unfortunate. I have some other steps you can try to fix the problem:

Please make sure that no third-party applications are interfering with the game. Please try to install and run the game in “clean boot mode”. Instructions on how to do that can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Make sure the account you create for clean boot mode is granted Administrator privileges.

If above doesn't help maybe you have access to a different PC that meets the system requirements and that you could use to play the game?

If not, I can convert this order to store credit that you can use towards buying a different game.

Please let me know if this fixes your problem.
Sigh.

TheTingler: Got a reply from GOG Support, however it was just the stock "please try these things" and nothing specific. Update graphics and sound drivers for example (why would sound drivers stop my mouse pointer appearing?). Did indeed do them all and nothing.
We have those "please try these things" in place so that we can eliminate common causes to technical issues with games. Once the common solutions are shown to not work we are able to know better that a given problem requires more work.
Got a reply today asking me to do the following:

1) Please make sure that you use "Run as Administrator" to install and to start the game (right-click on the shortcut or setup file and select "Run as Administrator"). If you are using Galaxy, then make sure to run Galaxy as Administrator.

2) Please reinstall the game AND add it to your anti-virus/firewall software's exception/trusted list. Simply disabling firewall or AV software could not be enough, since some of these software are running still in background or in services list. If you are using Galaxy, then please add Galaxy as well.

3) Reinstall the June 2010 DirectX runtime package, then use the DirectX web installer.

You can find the archive file containing the 2010 package installation files here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

You will have to extract the files into some folder, then open that folder and launch the DXSETUP.exe file in order to proceed with the installation.

Afterwards, download the latest DirectX web installer and use it as well:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

4) Try disabling DSR:
http://www.gog.com/support/support_view/potential_issues_with_supersampling_dsr_factors_feature_on_highend_geforce_cards

5) Maybe you have some settings forced on your graphics device in NVidia Control Panel. If so then try to reset them:
I) Right-click on your desktop and select Nvidia Control Panel.
II) Click Manage 3D Settings.
III) In the upper-right corner, click Restore Defaults.

6) Please try disabling the “enhance pointer precision” option. To do this, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Mouse -> Pointer Options, then make sure that “Enhance pointer precision” is un-checked, and click OK.

I tried everything on the list. DSR and the enhanced pointer precision already was off. Nothing has helped.

I got a very similar response, in addition to "Please make sure to deactivate and/or unplug all controllers."

I also tried all of the listed actions and saw no improvements. :(
Same here just flickering mouse - impossible to play. Very disappointed about the things support said above. I once had a totalöly different question and they replied the same with the same "solutions". It's a shame since I really was curious about the game. But if this is all I will get and the messages above all support will deliver I'll probably have to refund it. Would be my first GOG game ever to refund ... hopefully it will not come to this.

Edit: I just found out that the mose cursor will just flicker a bit if I HOLD any key while moving it. No real solution but maybe it can help to find one?

I hope it doesn't have to come to getting a refund. This is the first GoG game I've had that's been unplayable like this. Since its new out, surely they can find the problem and patch it?
Same issue here....hope it gets fixed...

Tried it on my Windows 10 computer, my Windows 8 computer, my Windows 7 computer, my Vista computer and my Windows XP computer...responded exactly the same with each of them except Windows XP. Works fine on that.

I've received a second response from GOG support with one more suggestion that has not been mentioned in this thread. I have not had a chance to try it yet, but posting it in case it helps any of you.

"Please try to force V-Sync for this game. In order to do this you need to open your Catalyst Control Center (right-click on empty desktop space and select it). In Catalyst Control Center, go to Graphics -> 3D -> All, once in there scroll down the list and select - 'Wait for vertical refresh' and and set it "Quality - Always on" option on far right on the slider.
Once that is done hit the "save profile" button. It will ask you which .exe file you want to apply it to. Go find the game installation folder (default: C:\GOG Games\game-title\) find game executable file, and choose it. Apply settings.
If my instructions here aren't exactly right, you should still be able to figure it out from that screen in the Catalyst Control Center. It can't be little different, because AMD changed layout for some menu options."

I guess it might be worth a try for any of you with NVIDIA cards to change v-sync in the equivalent NVIDIA settings too.

Oh boy, forcing VSync? Who do they think we are? That's one of the first thing we all probably may have tried already. I thought they were professionals but this is 101 of simple support. Anyway at least for me I FOUND a possible fix (it works for me). It is a workaround but no mouse flicker and all videos are still working. Cannot guarantee the game may not crash at a time but it seems to work. Here is how I fixed it for me:

Since the problem obviously have to do something with how the screen is drawn I suspected directdraw to be the thing I'd have to deal with. I managed to get some old DDraw games to work using a free and open source DirectX Wrapper. The problem with it is that it has many many checkboxes and options and it's hard to find out which one you'll have to check. I experimented about half an hour and found a setting which worked for me.

-First download the wrapper here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/files/latest/download
-Extract it anywhere and start dxwnd.exe
-Click edit and chose add in the menu
-In "Name" you can enter whatever you want ("Starship Titanic" would be a good name I'd guess ;))
-In path chose the executable of the game (st.exe) NOT only the path itself
-In the register "Main" uncheck "Hook all DLLs" and check "No banner" (splashscreen), "Keep aspect ratio" and chose "Desktop" instead of X,Y coordinates
-In the register "Video" check "Lock sys colors", "Lock reserved palette enties", "Forces 16BPP desktop" - also chose SVGA modes in screen resolution and limit it to 640x480
-In the register "Compat" check and chose "Windows 95"
-Click OK
-Double click on the green lit entry Starship Titanic (or whatever name you chose)

Hopefully I haven't forgotten any checkbox you have to change. I will test it again to make sure and will edit my post if I have forgotten something. Hopefully this helps others. It helped me getting mousepointer back on nvidia GTX960 Win7/64 Dx11.

Edit: Checked it again with a new profile - if you only change what I have listed above it should work.

Forgive my ignorance, Marko, but I've tried what you suggested exactly and my entry for Starship Titanic after clicking OK is grey. I can't seem to get it to turn green. I can't seem to do anything with the path or .exe to make it green. I'm on a GTX680 but using Win764 and Dx11 like you. Do you have any insight? I appreciate you sharing what you've found.
Hey all,

I had a similar problem (missing mouse cursor that seemed able to interact with the environment).. opened a ticket on it but in the meantime I've found an odd fix that might be worth trying out. If I continually hold down an alphanumerical key or some other command key (e.g. the esc key) the cursor stays visible albeit while flickering enough to trigger a fit. Might be worth a shot if you're desperate.

**edit** scrap that MarkoH01's fix works great. Thumbs up

I'd think that you may just have forgotten to check a checkbox (maybe the checkbox "Hook enabled" is not checked). If Hook enabled is checked and the entry still is grey please send or post some screenshots of the registers and I will see if I can find the error.

Please also take a look here and see if this helps.

Glad to hear that it could help others too :)
Marko I followed your instructions and the icon did show as green, but when I double click it nothing happens.

Maybe you have missed a setting but maybe the wrapper does need other settings or does not work at all in this case on your GPU. As I said it is not a solution but a workaround which may or may not work. You may experiment with different settings and see if this is helping.

But since it is very easy to forget a setting (or I may also have forgotten to write it down) I exported my settings and attached the file here.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B45YJj6bhfxaMFpDRmNyRXJkeDQ/view?usp=sharing

To import it please copy the file anywhere start the dxwnd program and chose "File" + "Import". Now browse to the file. After importing you probably will have to change the path so click on the entry, right click and the chose "Modify" to change the launch path (remember to include the st.exe at the end of the path). If you use this file, changed the launch path correctly so that the entry is green and it still does not work you can only start to experiment with the settings. I would suspect a setting in the "Video" register but my guess is probably as good as yours.
