misato: I wish everyone would quit saying this isn't broken, because it is. Haven't tried Starflight 2 yet, but Starflight 1 keeps saying 'game loaded but not saved - Press any key to exit', and then does nothing. So to do something, I press a key, and just like it says, it exits. So no game. If that's not broken, I don't know what is.

KHHill91: Did you solve your issue and are you able to play?

This game dates back to the days of 5.5 inch (140mm?) floppy disks. The designers were able to fit the entire game on two of those disks but did not have enough room for a save file. What we had to do was make a copy of the original disks and play the game from the copy. Before exiting the game you had to save the game first.

You could copy a saved game from one pair of 5.5 inch disks to another pair and you could restore that game by making another copy. I remember having dozens of 5.5 inch disks titled Starflight A and Starflight B in various game states.

Anyway, fast forward into the 21st Century. The game loads the game state from the current STARFLT Folder. If you have exited the game without saving, the STARFLT Folder will no longer work and you have to make another copy.

Here is what I do:

1. I have one folder labeled "STARFLT - Original". This is where I keep the Original Save. If I want to start a game from scratch, I make a copy of "STARFLT - Original" and then rename it "STARFLT".
2. When I save the game, I go back to the Directory and make a copy of the "STARFLT" Directory and rename it "STARFLT - Description". This is how I keep multiple saves.

Additional notes:
I play on Windows 7. I have not figured out how to get past the Administrator issues so I right click on the icon and run the program as Administrator. I think I am supposed to change the characteristics of the directory so that any user can modify the contents.

I have played through the game and am still enjoying it very much!

The default settings for Dosbox are very fast. I changed the number of cycles to 1000 and that gives me satisfactory results. 2000 or 2500 may also work but I go based on how much time elapses between Terrain Vehicle moves when I am on planetside.

ADDIT: I also play in windowed mode and keep the GOG Starflight Code Generator so that I can enter the security code. I also note that the code is generated upon entering the starship so if I save the game before launching from Starport then that saved game will always ask for the same code.

Does this help?
Well, thanks much for the help on this. I will try this remedy of yours soon. As far as the 5 1/4 inch floppies, does anybody really still have any of those, especially blank ones? I thought I was bad still having about 100 3 1/2 inch disks.

I not only do, I still have SINGLE-SIDED 5 1/4" floppies from my old C64 (which I also still have).
