[EDIT: an addendum: it's not just the dog's bark, it seems like all its sounds overpower everything else. Its tail slap is just as obnoxious, thumping, sniffing, everything]

I just started playing, only 8 days in, and this dog's barking is ridiculously obnoxious. It's louder than anything else in the game, wtf?! lol

Gonna just restart and not adopt the damn thing this time. Kinda fudged my first gameday anyway so it's no biggy.

Restarting is no biggy I mean. The dog's bark being so annoying I wanna restart to get rid of it... is pretty-pretty-preeettttty bad.

What dog bark?

tinyE: What dog bark?
There's a chance in Spring that you get to adopt an animal: dog or cat, depending on which you selected when creating your character. Every single sound the dog made (tail wagging, some sort of ground-thump thing, barking, et al) overpowers the game, just way too loud compared to everything else going on. AND annoying on top of that, by which I mean the sounds also happen far too frequently.

I decided to just restart my game and opted out of adopting when the choice came up. Looks like the modding API is out or something like it all ready? If I knew how to, I'd adjust the dog's sound file(s) myself.

OH!!!

Yeah I took the cat and he doesn't really make any noise.
It's simple to remove dog sounds, if your OS is compatible with Microsoft Cross-Platform Audio Creation Tool.
With that program, you can open the XACT Sound Bank (.xsb) file where the dog barks, thumping, etc are stored.
Use Audacity to edit the bark, for example, and remove it or lower the volume.
Convert to .xsb and overwite in the Stardew folder.
I would do it for you, if I hadn't updated to windows 10. The audio creation tool always crashes when I try to run it.

Awesome, thanks!

sambotwan: Awesome, thanks!
I've good news, sambotwan.
The dog was starting to get on my nerves, too, so I've created a simple mod: https://www.mediafire.com/?332cawcssg43df2
I used virtualbox to install Windows 7, since that OS is compatible with Microsoft Cross-Platform Audio Creation Tool. Now I can edit the sounds and musics from Stardew.
V1.0 removes the bark sounds. Your dog will never bark again.
For the time being, it's the only thing the mod removes, since the bark was the easiest sound to find in the folder (there's 355 audio files in Stardew Valley).
I plan to make a version where the dog is completely silent, as you requested.
One of the other things that annoys me are the train sounds.
I'll make another mod to remove them.

Is there anything you can't fix? Why aren't you working for NASA or something? :D

Thank you! :)

I finished v.1.1 - now the dog is completely silent. Download link below.

Instructions:
- Make a copy of Wave Bank.xwb (.../Stardey Valley/Content/XACT), and save it in another folder. Just in case you want to hear the dog again.
- Extract the new Wave Bank to XACT folder, overwrite.
- Start the game.
- Go to options, Footstep volume, and reduce to zero (unless you don't mind hearing the dog steps when its running in the farm, and scratching).
It doesn't seems possible to remove only the dog steps sounds, so you have to mute the farmer steps, too. Sorry about that.

Is there a mod which makes the cat purr? The way it meows on interaction, it feels like I'm torturing it instead of petting.

It should be easy to change.
The hardest part is finding a good sound.
I'll see what I can do.
This dog bark mute file is out of date and causes the game to crash when seeing Emily's Dream.
