As there's still no German Version of the X-Wing Collector's CD available on GOG I decided to build my own "language patch". Today I figured out which files I need to take from an original installation and I also created a new game.gog file using my "X-Wing CD-ROM Edition" disc.

I have a fully working GOG-X-Wing-CD game now with German text and audio. @GOG: I'd like to offer you my "patch" so you can make the German version of this great game available for everyone!
I've recently tried it on my end as well and it works well. :)

Perhabs you could ask Darksaber (from the XWAUP team) if he's interested in hosting your patch.
Afterall, he also hosts language packs for XWA. :)
If you play the German CD-ROM Edition, you will need that fix in order to properly play some of the (broken) B-Wing expansion missions: http://www.moddb.com/games/star-wars-x-wing-special-edition/downloads/star-wars-x-wing-cd-rom-edition-missionspatch1

hi,

is it possible to share the data with me? or tell my which files in which folder need to be copied to which location?
I've tried a bit and messed it somehow up, the game now crashes upon mission briefings...
My eight year old son would like to play X-Wing and since he cannot speak english yet, a German version would be much appreciated :)
From what I understand the OP used an actual official German version of the X-Wing CD release to build a "GOG version" that is in German. If you have an original German version CD, it should not be much of a problem to get it installed and running with DOSBox, without using the GOG files at all.

I don't understand why the OP did not contact GOG to give them the files (they've been known to include user donated versions as well as rewarding the users for it), as well as post the instructions to do it here, for those who already have the files.

In the mean time, in case you did not realize, the floppy release (1993) has a German version download here on GOG. Your son could play that.

These are the steps I did to germanize my X-Wing CD GoG installation

1) Copy the following files from the original CD-ROM to your GoG installation:
BFLIGHT.OVL
BFRONT.OVL
BWING.EXE
INSTALL.EXE
MICRO.FNT
SETMUSE.EXE
SMALL.FNT
TINY.FNT
XWINGCD.001
(Make sure to back up their counterparts in the GoG installation first.)

2) Make a CD Image of your CD-ROM. Once it is done, copy it into your GoG installation

3) Open dosbox_xwingcd_single.conf (make a backup copy first) and replace the line imgmount d "..\game.ins" -t iso with imgmount d "..\[CD_image_name.format]" -t iso.

4) Optional but highly recommended:
Download and install the German Mission Patch:
https://www.moddb.com/games/star-wars-x-wing-special-edition/downloads/star-wars-x-wing-cd-rom-edition-missionspatch1
(Instructions are included)

5) Enjoy playing X-Wing in German. :)

Believe me, they have the German version for a looong time already (I sent it to them years ago and reminded them every couple of months - to no avail). I also sent them the German versions to "X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter" and "TIE Fighter" (floppy version). I've also sent them tons of German manuals I've scanned myself for all those games. It looks like things got more complicated when Disney bought Lucasfilm.

Thanks for the effort!
thank you very much for the instructions... do you also have an HowTo for X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and TIE Fighter?
I also have the German CD's available but don't know which files need to be copied... tried on my own, but messed up and the game didn't work properly...

Localizations for the X-wing games are weird, I think a lot of stuff is baked in the exe files of the game.
The Italian localization of XWA for example stopped working if you downloaded the patch from the Lucasarts website instead of the local distributor because the CDcheck stopped recognizing the main exe file.

The German CD-ROM of TIE Fighter is available from GoG already.
For XvT, you simply need to copy and paste all text, video and soundfiles from the original CD-ROM to the GoG installation. That's what I did. :)
