I'm not too far into the XWA campaign, however while playing quick skirmishes in the simulator I noticed some discrepancies concerning the wingmen commands:

-The manual mentions the "defend my target" and "watch my six" commands for the defensive sub-menu. Both commands are missing in-game.
- When selecting "Help me out" for the whole squadron, the command is only acknowledged by the first ship in the squadron (One). If the ship is dead, nobody else acknowledges this command when given to the whole squadron. You have to give it indivudually to a single wingman.
- The same happens when selecting Squadron - Status - Report in, only the first ship reports its current orders, the rest are silent.
- The command "loosen formation" (8) in the formation sub menu doesn't seem to have any effect.

I'm wondering what's the deal here? It should't matter all that much from a gameplay perspective, but it seems strange.

I wouldn't be surprised if some things in the AI and wingmen commands weren't properly finalized.
The game does seem to have balance issues at easy (some were patched at the time) and hard, the film room was patched in (together with some fixes to the easy difficulty) and wasn't present at launch and in general some aspects of the game feel a bit rushed.
Unfortunately the game seems to have fallen victim of the restructuring of Lucasarts during the late 90s that happened because of the prequels, it's surprising that it managed to come out as good as it did.
I think you are correct. I checked the official strategy guide from back then and it only shows two different defensive commands, like it is in the game. The manual seems to be slightly outdated compared to the release version of the game.
