I really want to get the entire x-wing and tie fighter series since is on a good price right now, but reading the reviews made me a little worried, it's confusing wheather or not all versions are included and there's people complaining about this saying the best versions are not included and you NEED a joystick to play.

So, do I really need a joystick to play? By joystick, it meas it only accept oldschool controllers?

Can I play it with modern USB joystick such as a wireless xbox controller?

Also the versions included here are worth it?

Thanks

The DOS versions of the original X-Wing and Tie Fighter can be played with Keyboard and Mouse. The Windows 95 remakes of those two, as well as X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance require a joystick.

You could, in theory, use a modern controller, but the controls aren’t designed for it. The joystick controls are designed for a flightstick. That said, there are guides out there on how to optimize the controls for an X360 or Xbone controller.

All DOS and Windows versions are included now (the DOS CD versions of X-Wing and Tie Fighter weren’t initially included, but they are now). X-Wing and Tie Fighter each include the original DOS floppy, the DOS CD, and the Windows 95 versions. The community has come to the consensus that the DOS CDs are the definitive versions. The other two games only have one version each, but they are the most complete versions of their respective games.

Also, Rogue Squadron isn’t part of this series, but since it is included in the Starfighter bundle, I’ll add that it is designed for a controller (it’s a Nintendo 64 port), but it can be played with a Keyboard and Mouse or even just the Keyboard.
Thanks a lot SirYoda, that clarified things, I did my homework before posting here but going by the users review things were a little confusing, some love it some complaing about not having certain version and stuff.

I'll look into some guides for using modern controllers, if I find out it works good enought I'll probably get the games.

As for rogue squadron I already own the N64 version, what I really want is the x-wing and tie fighter games, I hear people saying those are awesome and also because I really love pc games from that era :) I was only worried because I don't have an old school joystick handy

Thanks for the info

Many reviews are rather old, at first they didn't have the CD DOS version, only the original flopy and the windows version and people got rather vocal about it in the reviews.
