So I own X-Wing, Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance and I enjoy a good space sim with a narrative and a campaign. I don't care much for multiplayer or random skirmishes and standalone missions. From what I read, XvT was multiplayer focused and the Balance of Power expansion for it had a single player component, although it feels like the single player part was really an afterthought.

Is it an actual campaign with a narrative or is it just a collection of standalone missions? Is it worth getting if I only care about the campaign?

The campaign has a story and even a handful of cutscenes, only a lot of the lines in-mission and the briefings aren't voice-acted for some reason.
I believe XvT is worth it in general but I'm biased and my opinion is a minority in that regard.

If you get it for the campaign, you're going to be doing a lot of reading at the briefing and debriefing screens. Like Det_Bullock said, there arent any voice clips for the messages so one can easily miss the messages in flight or briefing/debriefing. I went through the entire BOP campaign and I think I can only recall 1 or two messages that stood out to me. Not because its bad dialog (its decent) but because there is no "beep" or sound to alert you when getting the message.
Well, the log at least allows for the lines to stay on screen a bit longer before they fade, basically all of the stuff that was on separate screens on TF opens a sort of window in XvT and the log when not scrolled manually using the arrow keys always displays the last two or three lines of communication.

Cheers, I don't mind any reading. Hell one of my favorite games is Planescape: Torment and playing that game is like reading 6 books one after the other. I'll grab XvT when it comes on sale.
