I'm playing X-Wing and am sick of debris jumping out in some random direction (mostly at you) and killing me... despite often having full shields and no damage. Whenever an enemy gunboat, transport, or shuttle gets destroyed I've always got to keep my distance and it's frustrating. I've disabled debris from a menu screen and that didn't do anything. I've had to disable starship collisions, but then the game won't let me progress... how is that considered a cheat when it supports both sides?

The second point pertains to friendly fire, which happens when a stupid friend gets behind you and fires on an enemy you're going after. Worse still is that enemies can not only fire on their own w/out damage but fire on you right through their own ships! Seriously how do you disable friendly fire or enable enemy fire to damage their own ships?

Any mods to fix these problems?

Which version are you playing?
Floppy or CD DOS?
Also the debris options is referred to all those little animated debris you see during normal flight, not to the debris of killed starfighters.
I don't remember getting killed by enemy fighter fragments this often as I don't remember getting hit by friendlies in the CD dos version.

Not that I know of.

The collision cheat does not really benefit the AI, I never ever saw one of the ships hit by the debris when destroying an enemy right in front of them, I think they are scripted to keep a safe distance always, so it's only a player's problem, hence the "cheat" flag
But really, is just a matter of practice; you'll soon learn the best way to approach a slower target like transports, and it adds a little bit of complexity to the game, which would otherwise always bog down to a mindless "get 2 inches from the tail->shoot" for those kind of targets which are already fairly harmless

The friendly fire thing is slighly more annoying, but again not common as to become a serious problem (in TIE Fighter can be a bigger issue, since you are flying shieldless craft that can be two-shotted for a good chunk of the game, but the always shielded/sturdier ships of X-Wing shouldn't get obliterated that fast by FF, unless you are unlucky/slow to get out of the way)
It's always a good habit to direct your your wingmen to specific targets anyway, for this and other game consideration, so while I wish the AI was less dumb in that regard, friendly fire is rare and not normally disruptive to the game.

Having said that, if you dig a bit on Google you should be able to find some old DOS TRS trainer that would allow to unlock progress on the campaign even when the in-game cheat options are on.

It's X-Wing Alliance for Apple. It's got the B-wing expansion pack.

How does collision avoidance NOT benefit the AI? From what I recall you're just as much capable of plowing through TIE's as you are being plowed over by shuttles, gunboats, and transports. They're not scripted to stay away from debris, given that TIE's can launch from destroyers at almost point-blank range. I've tried to take advantage of this, but haven't gotten ONE ship to destroy another with debris. If anything disabling lethal debris would take away a cheat which the enemy had enabled the entire time. Mind you I wouldn't mind debris DAMAGING my craft, but it's almost always insta-kill. Did the programers seriously have too much time on their hands to create a 'lethal debris' algorithm but forget to disable enemies firing through their own ships?

Yeah, of course they did. Still it would be a much more enjoyable game if debris were more predictable or didn't go above a certain damage level, say a missile. Did one mission three times just now and was killed by this very feature... I HATE LETHAL DEBRIS!!!

Uhm, X-wing Alliace was a later windows game that came out in 1999 IIRC and had no expansions, that's just the X-wing game for mac.
Which is an exceedingly rare version so I have no idea if the game acts some what differently.
Though I'd suggest you to slow down when dogfighting slower craft, possibly by maxing either lasers or shields or both, therer are also the 1/3 and 2/3 throttle preset keys, unfortunately no version of X-wing had a match speed key before the windows CD remake made before X-wing Alliance.
I actually played a demo version for MAC from maybe as early as 1993 and that one most definitely had 'match target speed' attributed to ENTER, which means they deliberately removed that function in the final product.

Also I don't want to reduce thrust and get more distance, I want those ships not to magically stop on a dime and throw their burning hulks at me. I can cope with lethal debris just continuing along its path without any problem, but it doesn't do that. I know I'm whining but this one problem has caused more frustration than literally everything else about the game combined.

I hate beyond anything getting a huge kill count on some long mission and then suddenly an exploding gunboat comes flying right at me like a final '**** you!' And then getting captured and having that stupid guard in the intro screen aim his gun at me and yelling 'you must register!' as if I didn't just score a major victory for the rebellion! Great career with hundreds of kills, all ruined because my so-called 'allies' abandoned me!!!

EDIT: Just played Tour 1: OP: 2 and I took out the entire fleet, save for the Star Destroyer. Everything was going swimmingly until my A-wing collided with a TIE bomber of all things!!! I was @ 100% health and 200% shields! What's worse is that the rebels didn't think destroying 3 frigates, 10 corvettes, >100 TIE fighters with an A-wing was worth a rescue attempt! After such a betrayal I'd have given all my secrets to the Empire willingly!

I know... I put WAY too much thought into this imaginary universe.
