Starting the game I get an black screen.
If I open task manager there is a little window hidden in the background

Title: ERROR
Message: Game could not start

Insights? Log Location? Anyone else?

I have got it to work on a low res monitor 1024x1280 but doesn't work on the hi res displays.

Windows 7
Hi-Res Display: 3240x1920

I'm having this same problem.

Windows 7, 1920x1080, tried all manners of compatibility settings and resolutions

The same thing happens to me. The DOS version starts fine, but the windows version gives me the error message. My computer is running Vista.

I'm having the same issue with Tie Fighter as well.

I'm also having the same issue. I can't get X-Wing or Tie-Fighter to run, both throw the same error and require a Task Manager kill. The support portal recommends to runs the Graphic Mode Setup Utility, but I can't find that. It's not in the game directory as the support articles state.

Throwing my name in here because I can't get X-Wing (1998) to work. But Tie Fighter (1998) works fine.

My PC Specs:
- i7 3770k @ 3.9GHz
- 8GB RAM
- NVIDIA GTX 780 Classified
- Single Monitor @ 1920x1080
- Windows 8.1

what kind of game controller are you guys using?

here's some guy in the comments saying the game runs fine for him with an ps3 controller, but it doesnt with an x360 one.

maybe you should disconnect your game controller and check if this error occurs with vJoy, too. just for testing.

I'm using an Xbox 360 controller. If I try to open the game without anything plugged in, it prompts me to "Please check your joystick and make sure it's plugged in."

If I install vJoy, it gives the original error message of "The game could not start."

I asked Hawk (he's a friend of mine) to try right clicking on the shortcut and going to the properties and setting the compatibility to run in 640x480 mode, and he said it fixed the issue.

I tried starting the game with a Thrustmaster joystick plugged in. Same result. Error message and game wont start.

Yeah, I tried this, along with running in different compatibility modes and 640x480 - still no dice. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I finally got it to work! All I had to do was update the drivers for my graphics card. I feel silly...
