Backing up your Pilots is the only way to reach higher ranks (or not dying), but its a pain in the butt with XWING1998,
cause you cant alt+tab out of the game, you cant even change the front window by opening task manager, nothing.
You have to exit the game, copy files, re-enter the game, blabbla, yadda yadda, you know the deal.

So with the help of Autohotkey (http://www.autohotkey.com/), SilentCMD (http://www.stephan-brenner.com/?page_id=345) i created a tool that allows you to backup and restore your pilot while beeig ingame!!!

I havent tested this with XWING for DOS, but it SHOULD work, as the filetypes and -folder are the same.

How it works:

Unzip downloaded files, put all files into your game folder.

Load up the PilotsXWING.exe, you'll see a little green icon in your taskbarcorner, that mean it runs in the background.

When the tool is running you can use two key-combos to backup and restore your pilot files, you can press:

CTRL+ALT+B to backup your current pilots
and
CTRL+ALT+R to restore your backuped pilots

BACKING UP your pilot works all the time, to be on the safe side (to have a backup) do this once before you start the game the first time.

I ALSO ADVICE YOU TO BACKUP YOUR PILOTS TO A SAVE PLACE THE FIRST TIME YOU'RE CHECKING THIS TOOL OUT, I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGED/DELETED PILOT-FILES!!!

RESTORING your pilot, i'd do that only while the cutscene of your rescue/capture/funeral runs, when you're
in the main hall or some other room the file seems to be locked and cant be overwritten. at least this happened
in tie fighter, it seems to work way better in xwing, but im not 100% sure, so better play safe.
You may have to enter and leave the register room once to get the restored file loaded. You can check that pretty easy
by looking at your "ships lost" count in your log

Dont worry, your captured/dead pilot wont loose his points, if you accidentally pressed backup instead of restore, i thought off that, your last backup will always be copied to another folder, you can exit the game and restore your overwritten pilot by hand. Files are in Yourgamefolder\BACKUP\SAVE1-3
