Anyone having problems could also try my fork of the solution used for X-Wing Alliance:

Doesn't seem to need patching of the exe either to re-enable 3D mode.
I tried this solution, but it looks like I am still in the software mod. I patched the exe files to activate the 3D Hardware mode, enabled it in the config of the game and did the setup of the DGvoodoo2.

The Direct Draw 5 comes only, when you activate the skip of the beginnin cutscene in the launcher. Deactivating and the game starts normally.

But it looks for me like the same in software mode.

I have an GTX 960 on Windows 10 with the newest Nvidia drivers. No crashes, but the graphics looks like in software mode.

Do you mean "DDraw init failed at 5" ? I only get this error when trying to use dgVoodoo with the unpatched game so maybe the patch wasn't applied properly.

If it's XvT you might need to patch z_xvt_.exe in both the XvT and the BOP folder. Gerwin's patch only works for BOP, you can find my patches for both the base game and addon a bit further down in gerwin's thread at vogons.org.

Reimar's wrapper in the post above yours works without patching the game.

If you want to use dgVoodoo, you can try this workaroundI I created for the Steam versions of the X-Wing games since I found no way to patch those.

Works this also for the GOG Version or only for the Steam Edition?

You mean my workaround? Yes, it does.
It works perfectly, thank you very much.

Thanks Reimar, that worked perfectly and everything looks so wonderful now in X-Wing. Haven't yet tried it with TIE Fighter or XVT but I will. FYI it still requires the patch to enable hardware acceleration AFAICT.

Works fine without it for me.

the game ran, but it still rendered in software mode. I'll just test again... No, you're quite right, no patch necessary!

Does anyone know if something similar is required for X-Wing Alliance or does that work out of the box?
@Reimar:

Thank you so much for your wonderful solution, it really does the trick. But unfortunately, the mouse cursor is stuck in the upper left corner of the screen (it can only be moved in a small rectangle). :(
Any idea what might be the problem here?
