Improved voice files AND THE RESTORED SCORE FROM THE ORIGINAL are now available through an updated, GOG-specific release of the TIE FIGHTER RE-CONSTRUCTED project. This includes higher-quality voice recordings for all briefings and messages (restored from the previous CD-ROM release). Even better, it changes the music back to the original(ish)* score, remastered with much better samples and fidelity, through Daniel ‘Yitzchak’ Bennett's TIE Fighter RE-Orchestrated project.

*(I say "ish" only because the score had to be "baked in" to digital audio files since the engine no longer supports the interactive MIDI iMUSE dynamic score system. But don't let that deter you-- this score gets you WAY closer to the original experience, and is not to be missed.)

This is a simple modification-- all you have to do is download the ZIP, and replace the contents of the included folders in your GOG installation. You don't even have to mess around with CD images or anythhing-- they made it super simple to drag 'n' drop your way to Imperial Glory.

What it includes:
- Re-orchestrated music tracks by Daniel 'Yitzchak' Bennett based on the DOS version of Tie Fighter. This restores the awesome original soundtrack of Tie Fighter (which was removed from the Windows version in favour of John Williams' score). However, it is not dynamic like the DOS version
- Menu music is MUCH higher quality
- Higher Quality speech based on the DOS CD edition of the game
- Patch by Pete Jatz which fixes some issues with the music in the game and restores some spots where music was not playing in the Windows version

Executor-sized thanks to GOG user InfinityBCRT and the crew who put this together and made it available to the community, including musician Daniel ‘Yitzchak’ Bennett. Great work all-around for helping restore this classic!

Excellent thread, sticky it ASAP!
I can confirm this works just perfectly and is really easy to install. Tried it yesterday as soon as it became available. Highly recommended for anyone playing the 1998 version.
Tagged. Any chance of doing the same for X-Wing?
This looks great, thank you Kristen!

You know, we were going to do it but life got in the way for Daniel and even myself back in 2012 when we originally did this. I recently asked him but he is not interested in doing it anymore. If anyone else is though I'd happily package and distribute the music as an "X-Wing Reorchestrated" mod.

I think you'd have a lot of fans. Stick it on a website w/ some google ads and you might even make a few dollars for your effort.

To be clear, I'm not the music man. Someone would have to step in to re-orchestrate the music of X-Wing

Have you considered asking around on the internet? I'm sure there's someone who would be willing to do it.

I'd offer to help but this is somewhat out of my realm of expertise.
Guys honestly this mod is amazing (and should be pinned). Even though I still miss iMuse, It feels much (MUCH) more like the Tie Fighter we were playing in 95.

With the updated Graphics and fantastic Joystick management this is almost the definite edition for me.

I would recommend it greatly.
Someone could at the very least fix the voices for X-Wing if not the music? Seems like that would be easy enough.

Anyway, I installed this mod and it's a VAST improvement, thanks to all those responsible.

However, did anyone else experience that the music in the intro runs a bit slow for the cutscene? The intro ends with the TIE-Fighters flying through the logo, but it's not synching with the part of the music that it's meant to - the intro ends before the music reaches its finale. Anyway - not a huge problem, I was just wondering if I was the only one who experienced it.

I hadn't looked at the voices for X-Wing, but I think I'd only want to do a proper mod release if someone were to do the music as well. I asked laser but seems like he doesn't have the time to do it. If you guys know of anyone who is talented, please let me know.

In terms of the intro, I noticed it was slightly cut off.. I have limited time now (got married and had a kid since I originally worked on this)-- if anyone wants to volunteer though, be my guest and I'll gladly give credit and post an updated version of the mod. I think I have the original intro music pieces but I'd have to dig deep into my emails with Dan to find them all. If someone could just fix the existing file as is that would be awesome (but I'm not sure how easy it'd be)

is there a comparison video..

cause "better" is always subjective
