I decided to go for the '94 version (Far superior due to iMuse imho), but the throttle on my Logitech Extreme3D Pro joystick doesn't seem to work, and there's no way to set up the joystick like in the Windows version.

Does anyone know how to get the throttle to work in the DOS version, like it does in the Windows version?

I had little luck with this myself. I tried a few joystick configuration programs and got close, but even with the more advanced ones that could send different keystrokes depending on the position of the throttle, they still had the problem of CONTINUALLY sending that keystrokes, so when you put throttle to max (or wherever) you get the repeated sound of hitting the FULL THROTTLE button over and over... and that kind of wrecks the vibe you have going with the iMuse music.

The way i settled was to break it into three positions, using Pinnacle Profiler. A big "DO NOTHING" in the middle third of the axis, the top third set to send "+" and the bottom third set to send "-" .... so i left it in the middle and just used it as a speedup/slowdown control. which actually did not work very well at all.

Anyway, hope your luck is better-- so far i have decided it's better to just set buttons to 0, 1/3, 2/3, and full power. blargh.

I'm having the same issue with my weird Ace Combat Six 360 Flightstick. Windows version throttle works fine, DOS does nothing. I'm pretty sure it just uses a 360 driver, so I'm not sure why it'd work differently from a controller.
The only way I have done it in the past with the likes of Wing Commander Privateer was using the software that came with my Thrustmaster joystick.

In that, I could set zones where it would sent different key presses. For example, when the throttle is down send backspace (Full Stop), between 10% and 30% send minus (Decrease Throttle), between 30% and 80% send plus (Increase Throttle), at 100% send TAB (Afterburner)

With X wing and Tie Fighter it should be a bit easier since there is preset Throttle in 3rds.

What software/model stick are you using? I'm using the T.Flight HOTAS X and I didn't get any mapping software, just drivers. I'm using JoyToKey, which successfully mapped the rest of the buttons, but I can't figure out how to set zones like you're referring to. I only seem to be able to map 100% and 0% at the fully forward and back positions.

There's an old TSR that did just that!

Download it here (http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=28807#p230212), extract JOY.COM to the game directory.

To actually have the game use it though, you're going to have to edit the DOSBOX config file in a text editor. Don't worry, you only need to add one line.

Open up dosbox_tie_single.conf in a text editor. Just before the line "tie.exe", add a new line and type "joy.com", save and close it.

Now when you play it will ask you to calibrate the throttle dial before launching the game. That's how you know it loads the TSR properly. If you did all that and it doesn't work ingame, you might need to swap Axes 3 and 4 in another DOSBOX config. Open dosbox_tie.conf, find the line in the [joystick] section and change the line swap34=false to swap34=true. You might not need to do that step depending on your joystick, but I needed to for my Logitech.

It only increments the throttle in thirds just like the [ ] \ keys, but then again that's all the Windows version does. Unfortunately there's nothing similar to enable rudder control, though the Windows version doesn't support that either

I just had a look into it. Unfortunately and it makes no sense, the TARGET software doesn't support the T.Flight HOTAS X, it only supports a few joysticks, my one being one of them.

You may be able to get it working if you try, but it doesn't look likely.

The download page for the software is:

I'm trying to get this working but I can't seem to get it right. Here's what the [autoexec] section of my tie .conf file looks like:

mount C HDD
MOUNT D E:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl
C:
cd TIECD
joy.com
tie
exit

I'm not getting the prompts to calibrate the throttle like you say I should. What am I doing wrong? (Also, I'm not sure I mentioned it, but I'm using the Collector's CD, if it makes any difference.)

Is joy.com in your TIECD folder? If you remove the tie and exit line, does it say anything about it not loading?

Thanks, It was in the dosbox folder. I moved it to the TIECD folder, and I get the prompts now before it loads the game. However, now the game stutters and is unplayable. Any advice for this new issue?

This can't be caused by joy.com.

What system do you have? If it's Windows 8, ensure that your video drivers are not forcing VSync (or add a rule to forbid it for dosbox.exe). Also change output=overlay to output=opengl. Also ensure that your cpu cycles is set to cycles=max.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. My current settings are output=direct3d and cycles=max. I changed to output=opengl and dosbox crashes at the first joystick calibration prompt. I don't remember changing anything to the config file other than adding joy.com, and after I removed it just now, the game plays fine again.
I'm running win 7 64 bit, and joy.com works for me (no stutters or performance impact). the only problem is that it maps the throttle to the "stick twist" axis rather than the throttle lever on my saitek st290 pro. I haven't tried changing the joystick types in dosbox config, but I will give it another shot tonight.

BTW, I'm running Tie Fighter 1995 CD, and not the GOG version.

I said exactly how to fix that. Change swap34=false to swap34=true.

thanks Tarvis! I'll try that tonight.

also, GLRob, this may not be your issue, but when I have my xbox 360 controller plugged in addition to my saitek stick, the in-game control stutters and is unplayable. I saw a windows setting to make a single controller the default for "legacy programs", but didn't try messing with this yet. Instead, I just unplug the xbox 360 controller before starting up tie fighter.

EDIT:
tested again with the config change suggested by Tarvis and it works perfectly. Thanks!
