Hi, everyone,

I have an Xbox 360 controller for Tie Fighter 98, but I find it's movements are a bit too extreme, compared to the Flight Stick I had more than 20 years ago. :)

Can anyone recommend a good joystick for this game that's reasonably priced (less than $50 or so)?

Many thanks!
DW
I'm very happy with my Saitek Cyborg EVO, but it's sadly no longer manufactured, which means you have to buy from third-party sellers and the price is inflated:

http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-102989-Cyborg-Evo-Joystick/dp/B0000AW9P1

I like it because it has lots of adjustments you can make to make sure it fits your hand comfortably, it can be adjusted for left- or right-hand use (although I'm right-handed so a right-hand-only stick would have been fine in my case) and it has programing software that lets you set keyboard keys or mouse inputs to the buttons / axes. That means that for older games that don't understand how a joystick could have so many buttons, you can still take advantage of the buttons by whipping up a little programmed profile for it.

Anyway, the follow-up stick from Saitek / Mad Catz, which IS still sold, is called the Mad Catz F.L.Y.5 stick. I've never used it, but it sounds like reviews are decidedly more mixed:

Unfortunately, it seems like most other sticks are really high end ones for enthusiasts that are pretty expensive. Then again, those might be worth it, as they can probably last a really long time and will work for lots of games, including all the new-fangled space sims that are supposed to be releasing in the next few years.

Anyone else have suggestions for less expensive flight sticks?

(Apologies to those in other countries for the Amazon links, but they seemed like the quickest way to show a price and some user reviews for the sticks)
If a simple but accurate joystick is what you're looking for:

You should be able to find one for less than $50,- and works great with TIE Fighter.

I second the T16000. It's precise enough and has twist rudder, so it'll be useful for most other sims, too.

I just stumbled across this post. I had a FLY 5 briefly, and wouldn't recommend it. Within a few days of buying it, the stick's rake adjustment (stick angle) stopped working properly. When I moved the stick, it would slip forward and back instead of locking into place. They "repaired" it and sent it back. When I got it back, the rake adjustment worked, but it had even more issues. Button 2 stopped working, the hat switch only recognized up and down, not the other six directions, the sensors stopped detecting joystick motion after moving 50% to the left, and moving the stick all the way to the left made all the buttons stop working.

I returned it for a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X and never regretted it.
I just got the saitek x-55 and I love it.

Fully customizable, and the stick feels amazing. I like the fact it comes with different springs depending on how tough you like the stick to be. (I tend to like more tension as opposed to less, so it is perfect for me, but there are looser springs if you want to roll that way.

What my x-55 replaced was my x-52.

I got it at best buy YEARS ago. So...I really liked it in the time that I used it, but the connections that actually go into the joystick that connect it to each other and the usb port are pretty bad. When it was newer it wasn't that big a deal, but they wore out with time. Now granted, mine lasted for years until I had connection issues, but honestly, the build quality on the x55 is so much better, for only 50 dollars more, you might as well spend the extra and get a newer, better stick.

I hear great things about the X-55 from you and others, but the OP is looking for a budget stick, ideally $50 or less. The X-55 is four times that.

I just picked up the T16000. I first tried it in X-Wing and noticed that the Twist wasn't working at all. Before I had been playing with X-52 Pro and the twist did work with X-Wing. I'm wondering if there is a way to mess with configuration settings to get it to use the twist function of the T16000m.

EDIT: Nevermind, I forgot X-Wing doesn't have true twist programmed. In order to spin, you have to press the TOP of the joystick first then hold the stick left or right. Had to look that one up in the manual again.

So far, I can report that the T16000M indeed does work very well with X-Wing so far. I have not tried TIE Fighter or other flight games yet with it.
