Did you create a pilot?
^ that opens up an explorer window asking you where to save your pilot which, for me, initially was stuck behind the game window. I assume this happened because I ran a benchmark for the graphics settings first and it did work the 2nd time I started the launcher, so look out for that.
I had the same problem.

After some tinkering, I fixed it.

I went into the game directory and clicked on "SOTE.EXE".

After a short wait, the old style Lucas Arts game launcher came up and I clicked on "Play".

That opened the game configuration screen and I created the player, set the degree of difficulty and chose the screen resolution and just minutes later I was downing an AT-AT with my tow cable :)

Since then, each time I start the game through the GOG launcher, the "Play" option is active and I am good to go.

Enjoying this game all over again and it runs great, not too fast, on my multi-core system.

Good Times :)

You shouldn't need to have to do that, though. The GOG launcher (on first run of the game) opens up a dialog where you set the difficulty and the resolution (and some other options like fog and such). The Play button is indeed greyed out, but right next to it is a New Player button which you click on and choose a save game location (which I put inside the game installation folder). After doing that the Play button is no longer greyed out. Sounds like you just did that part inside the game itself rather than the launcher.

I did try to create a new player through the GOG launcher the first time around, but I could not get it to work - only doing it the way I did it, worked for me :)
If you don't test the game settings first, the screen to select a place to save the Player will appear on top. Worked for me :)
None of that worked for me sadly. Resolutions greyed out and getting the "Unable to initialize video card for 3D" issue. I've tried so many things. Using nvidia inspector, Dgvoodoo and setting my monitor to 60hz instead of 75 on my laptop. (Works on my desktop and when I plug in my laptop to my TV but I don't always have the opportunity to game at home)
