First off if you see this when you are trying to run the game with an Nvidia video card, I'm not sure how to get around it although I'm sure there is something similar.

I had this when I first installed the game using a Radeon R9 290x. To fix the DirectDraw issue follow these steps:

1) Open CCC (Catalyst Control Center)
2) Select Gaming >> 3D Application Settings
3) For Anti-Aliasing Mode - Set to "Override application settings"
4) The same for Anisotropic Filtering Mode - again set to "Override application settings"
5) And last, set Wait for Vertical Refresh - "On, unless application specifies"
6) Click apply and happy hunting!

In essence the game is no longer telling your video card how to display it, rather your video card is displaying the game the way it was meant to.

(As a side note this also solved some other issues with other games I play)
